Cl5 Decimals Questions

This document discusses decimals. It defines decimals as fractions with a denominator of 10 or a power of 10. Decimals have a whole number part and a decimal part separated by a decimal point. Fractions can be converted to decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. The value of each digit in a decimal number depends on its place value. Decimals can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided following typical number rules while accounting for place value of the decimal points.

DECIMALS

A Decimal is a fraction with its denominator fixed as 10 (or 100, 1000, etc.)
Decimal number is another way of representing fractions. Decimal numbers have a whole part and a
decimal part separated by a decimal point.

45.6 has 4 tens, 5 ones and 6 Tenths, shown as follows:

CONVERSION OF DECIMALS
Converting a fraction to a decimal is a division operation. So the fraction 3/4 means
3÷4=0.75.
Similarly, a mixed fraction can also be converted into a decimal by first converting it into an
improper fraction.
PLACE VALUE OF DECIMALS

Decimal numbers, such as 679.32815, have five digits after the decimal point. Each digit has a different
place value.

The first digit after the decimal point is called the tenths place value. There are 3 tenths in the number
679.32815.

The number 679.32815 has 2 hundredths, 8 thousandths, 1 ten-thousandths place and so on.

COMPARISON OF DECIMALS

Decimal numbers are compared in the same way as other numbers: by comparing the different place
values from left to right. We use the symbols <, > and = to compare decimals.

EQUIVALENT DECIMALS

A decimal is equivalent to another decimal if they look the same except for the number of zeros at the
very end of the number.
For the purpose of comparison, we can add as many zeroes at the end of a decimal (after the decimal
point) to make them equivalent.

SHIFTING OF DECIMAL POINT

The decimal point of decimals will be shifted to as many places to the RIGHT when multiplied by a
number with as many zeroes.
Similarly, the decimal point of decimals will be shifted to as many places to the LEFT when divided by a
number with as many zeroes in the denominator.

MULTIPLYING DECIMALS!
Multiplying decimals may seem like a daunting task at first, but once you learn how, you’ll find
that it’s just like multiplying regular numbers! To multiply decimals, follow the steps below.

Step-1. Multiply normally, ignoring the decimal points.

Step-2. Place the decimal point in the answer in the correct spot.
-It will have as many decimal places as the 2 original numbers
combined.

Solve the following multiplication problems. Write out all of the steps in your answers.
Do not forget to count the number of decimals places in the original numbers
and place the decimal point in your answer.
