INTRODUCTION
This test method covers the determination of the density of hydraulic cement. Its
particular usefulness is in connection with the design and control of concrete mixtures. The
density of hydraulic cement is defined as the mass of a unit volume of the solids.
METHODOLOGY
Apparatus:
1. Graduated Cylinder – 500 mL
2. Kerosene – free of water, or naphtha, having a density greater than 0.73 g/mL at 23
± 2° C shall be used in the density determination.
3. Balance
Procedure:
1. Weigh the container.
2. Put the kerosene.
3. Weigh the container and kerosene.
4. Submerge into water bath about 23 degree Celsius for 15min.
5. Dry the container.
6. Weigh the container and kerosene.
7. Put the cement.
8. Weigh the cement, kerosene and cement.
9. Submerge into water bath same temp and time.
10. Dry the container.
11. Take the final reading of weight of container, kerosene and cement.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This section presents the data gathered, results and discussion in the test method of
determining the density of hydraulic cement.
Observed data:
Weight of Grad. Cylinder 344 g
Weight of Grad. Cylinder with 538 g
Kerosene
Weight of Cylinder with Kerosene 602 g
and Cement
Weight of Cement 64 g
Volume of Kerosene 250 mL/cm3
Volume of Kerosene with Cement 273 mL/cm3
Volume of Cement 23 mL/cm3
Computations:
Determining the density of Cement:
Density formula : ρ = m/V
ρcement = mass of cement (g)/volume of cement (cm3)
64 g
ρcement =
21m 3
ρcement = 2.783 g/cm3
Using the observed data above, we computed the density of cement by the formula of
ρ = m/V and got a result of 2.783 g/cm3. Comparing it to the true value of density of a cement
which is 1.44 g/cm3, the test result is greater than by 1.343 g/cm3.
