SYNOPSIS

INTRODUCTION
An aerospace museum is a place where the artefacts and post war collectibles are kept for
public viewing or auctions.
Practically anything related to modern day or antique Aviation History is kept in an Aviation
Museum.
The Replicas of Aviation history is also housed in museums, also the things which were
proposed in cold war or pre-war era, are housed in an Aviation Museum.

AIM

To develop a design solution for an Aerospace Museum in Dwaraka Sector, Delhi NCR

NEED OF PROJECT

Military History is a very big part of A Democratic Country like India. The men and Women
who fought for our country and are still deployed in the line of duty, and their contribution is
endless.
There is a need for conservation and Publicised Appreciation for the many great efforts done
by the bravest men and women of India.
An aviation museum gives just that opportunity for it and also gives a window for
preservation and conservation of the glorious military history of our country.

OBJECTIVES

Primary Objective is to develop a holistic Environment for Preservation of Rare

and Important Military Hardware and Artefact.

Secondary Objective is to amalgamate form and function to bring about a

intuitive design which both shows clarity to purpose as well as traits of an
efficient design.
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The site is a proposed land placed around Dwaraka road and link road going towards The
Indira Gandhi international terminal.

The area proposed for museum construction is 43 acres and is to be funded by The ministry
of defence and DMC.

There are a number of issues both new and existing museums need to consider. These include
the use of space; control of the internal environment; visitor flow and comfort; building
security; maintaining the integrity of any heritage features of the site or building; and staff
comfort.

Use of space

• Ideally, allow approximately one third of the space to work areas, collection storage
and exhibitions.

• If retail facilities are planned, ensure that these are visually separate from exhibitions.

Collection facilities
• Storage areas should be internal rooms. ‘Box within a box’

• Allocate separate storage areas for different types of materials, where possible. Paper
and textiles should be stored separately from metals and wood

• Block natural light in all museum areas where collection are stored or displayed

• Ensure the building is well ventilated and that the air is filtered for dust.

• Minimise temperature and Relative Humidity fluctuations

• Plan for building security. See ‘Security’ information sheet.

Administration facilities

• Allocate a room for administrative facilities.

• Plan for curatorial space where staff can work without interruptions.

• Ideally, plan a research space where the public can use the museum’s reference
library, resources, and appropriate collection information.

• If there are museum guides or attendants, ensure they have a comfortable place to sit;
somewhere to store their belongings; a place to have refreshments, away from the collection.

Visitor flow and comfort

• A single point of entry and exit for visitors.

• If the museum site consists of more than one building, minimise the number of doors
used. This is for both security and climate control purposes.
• A group assembly area is advisable. This assists with managing school and group
bookings.

• Provide seating at strategic points throughout the museum.

• Clean toilets, conveniently located.

• Disabled access and safety considerations are paramount.

Heritage buildings

• Ensure that the heritage significance of any museum building or site is maintained and
interpreted. This can present some challenges. It may seem that the demands of caring for a
museum collection are not that compatible with the requirements of building conservation
according to the Burra Charter. This issue requires careful consideration and planning.

Future expansion

• The most common reasons for expansion are for additional work and storage space,
and to house large machinery. Allow for expansion needs in any new building, if possible.

• Appropriate housing of machinery should protect against further deterioration

(preventive conservation principles apply). This should, at the least, include a level, sealed
floor and walls that provide protection from the elements. Allow space for interpretation of
the machinery.

• Take into account the potential for archaeological research when planning any new
buildings.
LITERATURE CASE STUDY

The following are the case studies I have collected as possible references to my topic, the
Case Studies include similarity in National and International context which makes it easier
for me to do a sort of Comparative Analysis which further helps in finalizing Requirement.

The other major Advantage noted in my case, is understanding the Scale of the project, which
gives me added flexibility in Finalising Services and other Amenities for the required Project
Requirements.

The list of Literature case Studies consolidated for this project goes as follows.

1.

THE HANGAR FLIGHT MUSEUM CALAGARY, ALBERTA

The Hangar Flight Museum provides a community place and historical resource in Calgary.
The history of aviation is closely tied to Canada’s development as a nation and to Calgary’s
development as a vibrant, international city. Our Museum tells this history, expands and
inspires visitors’ knowledge of the stories surrounding aviation’s role in immigration, oil and
gas exploration, war and civilian pleasure travel. Many roadways in Calgary are named after
renowned aviators such as McKnight, McCall, Barlow and Palmer – who, after serving their
country in wartime, went on to develop civilian passenger and transport aviation.

PROJECT DELIVERABLES

Full Static Display – Non-Flying

The following describes our interpretation of static display restoration:

The airframe, engines (non-flyable), and major components of the aircraft are restored and
installed to represent a completed aircraft for the viewer while still maintaining the historical
integrity of the aircraft. However, all systems may or may not be installed or operable.

Aircraft artefact shall be restored and conserved so as to foster accurate public

interpretation of the displayed item. This is achieved by accurately representing the aircraft
by maximizing both historical integrity and structural integrity, both workmanship and
conservation techniques shall, to the greatest extent feasible, incorporate procedures, methods
and materials in use of for the aircraft at the representative date of the aircraft.
