The Problem and it’s Background

I. Introduction

Every year, graduating senior high school students are faced with the problem of

having to decide on future career paths. The decision whether or not to continue with

post-secondary education and the choice of an institution to attend are two critical

decisions that students make at this time in their lives (Johnson & Chapman, 1979).

There are a range of subjects and courses available which can help you reach new

careers, so it's important to research what's right for you. Many courses are vocational

and work-related, and lead straight into a career such as nursing or accountancy.

Others are academic and range from subjects you may have studied before in school.

Higher education courses are put together by individual universities and colleges, so

what's included and how they are delivered, may vary enormously as they draw on the

strengths of the staff and facilities. Due to the number of courses today, a student

graduating from senior high school may find himself in a difficult situation. Choosing a

course is a very important aspect. Aiming for dreams is easy but fulfilling them is not.

Choosing your courses are already the first step on your journey to a good career.

Before being admitted to a university, your course preference will always be asked.

Students must take everything into consideration. Today, senior high school students

choose to continue their course that is related to their track and some are going to

change their career. Financial factor is one of the reason why students change their

career. Others perception is because they are not fit to their desired course that's why

we conduct this research for us to know what are their preferred courses and what are

the reasons why they choose to continue their career or not.

1
II. Background of Study

Senior high school or SHS refers to the last two years of the K to 12 program that

has been implemented by the Department of Education here in the Philippines since

2013 – namely, grades 11 and 12. In the old system here in our county, high school

education consisted of the first year up to the fourth year. Today, those four years

correspond to Grades 7 to 10, otherwise known as junior high school or JHS and

Grades 11 to 12 is currently the Senior High School or SHS after that is the college

degree. Because of the additional two years in senior high school. This study is more

on preventive rather than a corrective action on the problems that may occur when the

implementation of K-12 in the Philippines wherein no first year students will enroll in

college There are some instances that it is not easy as most of people who are not yet

ready to face a new chapter of their life. They are having a hard time to choose a

career because they’re looking for a career that is in demand. Choosing college

courses wisely is essential to academic success in college. A student will choose a

course which he/she will be studying throughout his/her college years, and decision

making should take part and should not take for granted. The decision of which course

to take is one of the farthest decisions for a student especially those who are

graduating senior high school students. The decision on good course choice and

school sometimes depend on how the way students perceive the world and their

future. Some of them may not have enough knowledge about how they should process

information from personal, family, and environmental aspects of putting into realization

of having a successful profession. Several factors may be considered in selecting

school and degree program like quality education, the people from the environment,

personal choice; and accessibility of the school from students residences. These

factors may include job opportunity, preferred course of the parents, peer’s influence

and personal choice of course. With so many factors to consider in making a course

2
decision, students experience affects their emotion, attitude, and behavior. This

research will help us know what are the reasons why student choose a course. This

research shows that one of the reasons why students find it hard to pick a career is

because they are affected by their second thoughts and from what’s surrounding them.

The students need to be mature to choose the right path to take.

Every students has an own prepared career but because of some factors that affect to their

decision, they can pursue their prepared course although those factors became an hindrance

to for their decision, students still satisfied to the services offered by a certain school.

3
IV. Theoretical Framework

In choosing a career, we should consider a lot of things and we should also consider

ourselves and think, and decide carefully. Career guidelines, first consideration in choosing a

career path to pursue is the availability of work after college. Koech and his colleagues (2016)

concluded that the students, social interactions with teachers, parents, and peers affect the

students career choice. According to Alexander (2010) the three most important motivators of

students in choosing a career are good salary, stable job, and low stress. There are so many

factors to consider in making a career decisions. Students experience career uncertainly

which affects their emotions, attitude, and behavior. (Trevor Roberts 2006) they face complex

decisional tasks such as exploring different course of actions, reflecting on interests and skills,

comparing suitable course of actions, and choosing one option. Career preference, most of

the students nowadays are having their difficulties on choosing which course they will take

after they graduate. These theory will help us to decide properly. According to Super

(1990),career decision becomes significant during late adolescence and early adulthood.

During this time, Senior High School students enter a time, Senior High School students enter

a time in their lives when seeking career information and becoming aware of their vocational

interest is a major development task. As observed by Taveiraet (1998) the process of career

decision making can be particular stressful time in an adolescence life. Most students make

choice of programs and career is with influence by their peers. Others are advised to pursue

courses by their parents. In evert decision we make of should be confirm and clear so that we

become success in future.

VII. Significance of the Study

Vital results of this research would be highly significant and beneficial to the following:

This study helps the School School Administrators to enable them to find ways to improved

their school facilities and have a better teaching and learning process

This study helps the teachers to focus more on their fields and give a better learning

experience to their students because they are the one who have a huge part in teaching and

learning process.

The study helps the parents/ relatives to be the motivator of their children that serves to

be the main influence in their career development and decision making.

The study also helps incoming college students to determine the consideration in selecting

college degree. It also inspire them to formulate and act upon on their career plans in the

future. It will be a big help for the students who are confused on what to take.

The study helps the Researches to analyze the situation and identify actions to be done. It

also inspires them to innovate more programs that will be beneficial fo booth teachers and

students.

7
VIII. Hypothesis

Competition of Senior high school is a requirements for college admission, so if you’re aiming

to study a four or five year degree program in college, finishing senior high school is a must. Aside

from that senior high school also allows students to study general education subjects that they

wouldn’t have. Otherwise studied until their first or second year in college. Giving them more time

to dig deeper into their chosen specialization should they eventually decide to pursue higher

education. Besides excitement, challenges are also part of learning. If you are aiming high degree

you should pass these trials even though you’re not fit to the course you take. Because some of

the students are lack of financial to support their needs. While some students doesn’t fit on the

course they take because they parents want it from them. Most of the students want Philippines

to be more prosperous country because nowadays we have a problem which affect our prosperity

such as poverty, starvation, and corruption. Due to limited resources, not all senior high schools

can offer the tracks outlined in the program. Instead the availability of career tracks will be

determined based on the available senior high school’s ability to provide the equipment and

facilities necessary for a certain career track as well as the specific demands of the community

that they are operating in.

IX. Definition of Terms

Career- one of the most important steps students can do. In regards to applying the

colleges for their own best outcomes.

Chapter 2

Review of the Related Literature and Studies

Nowadays, Senior High School students have so much difficulties on choosing what college

course to take. They have been influenced by some factors that can be a key to boost their interest

on a specific course. This chapter reviews literature related to Senior High School students

decision making and their choices. It begins with a review of the student choice construct and

college course choice theory followed by an adaption of these constructs that leads into the course

selection process, and how Senior High School students select which course they will take.

Foreign Literature

 According to Robert H. Seashore “ the way you feel about yourself influences the way

other feel about you”, it explains that most of youth today are forced by their parents to be

like them, to choose the course they have been or even continue what they preferred, and

still they make the students feel pressured to do well with it.

 Hairston (2000) stated that the factors that influence career choice among the students,

family members particularly parents are the most influential determinant of career plan,

occupational expectations. Thus, he included that the parents play a vital role in

influencing the career choices among the students. They have been the last say on

students career decisions.

 According to Don Harvey (1996),career development refers to career decisions and

choices. Career planning refers to the efforts by an individual to become more awake of

one's own skills, interests, values and opportunities. It might help the students perspective

to decide what course they should take based on their career plan.

9
 According to Daft(1991), career planning is the self-assessment, explanation of

opportunities, goal setting and other activities necessary for making informed career-

related choices. It has a vital role in choosing a career and it will lead the students to their

right path.

 According to study made by Corey(2012), adolescents experiencing increased pressure

in making decisions and commitments that will affect the rest of their lives, and this

includes choosing their career. In conclusion, students in Senior High School are

experiencing pressure in terms of making decisions on choosing a career they would want

to pursue.

Local Literature

 Cabrera and La Nasa (2000), in their extensive review of previous research, found that

“research consistently shows a significant and negative relationship between tuition

increases and enrollment, an empirical relationship that conforms to public perceptions,”

that “low-income students’ decisions to attend college appear to be highly sensitive to

tuition and financial aid levels,” and that “although low-income students can be adversely

affected by tuition increases, financial aid can positively predispose them to attend college.

 Jesus M. Johnson, vice president of National University in the Philippines, writes in an

article entitled “Technical Education in Philippine Private Schools” (1982) that a major

problem is that students prefer baccalaureate courses rather than vocational courses. He

writes: ‘High school graduates enter college and enroll in courses dictated by their parents

or close kin, without regard to their particular aptitudes and ability. This is indicative of the

lack of proper vocational guidance and counseling’ (1982:22). Throughout the Philippines,

counseling and guidance are rarely available to help students to select tertiary schools,

choose specific programs of study.

10
 Cabrera & Nasa, 2000 research indicates that the high school environment “has an impact

on the college choices process of all students, with the greatest impact on minority and

low SES Students.

 Rowe, 2002 attributes of the high school attended “ is found to be positively related to

college attendance, although it does not have as strong predictive strength of factors as,

ability, or parental influence.

 Espinoza (2001) several studies have reported that rigorous high school curricula and

college attendance are positively correlated. A small positive relationship has also found

between college attendance and graduation from high school with a rigorous in math,

science, and other college preparatory subjects, even while holding student background

characteristics constant.

Foreign Studies

 Fizer (2013) identifies factors that can influence a college student’s choice for a career.

(1) the quality of life that they ought to have when they become old; (2) academic factors

where the students choose their major based on their academic performance. (3)

personality where the students who believe in themselves have more confidence and are

more likely to go far; (4) parental and peer factors; (5) gender, insofar as men have a more

liberal and progressive style of thinking and women prefer hierarchical style of thinking.

 McDaniels & Gysber (2002) expound that the family income, occupation of the parents,

wish and peers influences moderately affect the decision of the students in choosing their

career. Further, mass media such as newspapers, magazine, television program, and

social work literature also affect student’s career choices.

11
 Paulsen (1990), after reviewing previous research, concluded that based on

characteristics of student background and ability alone, individuals are more likely to

attend college “when family income is higher”. Furthermore, he found that when a

student’s family income is greater, he/she is more likely to apply to, or attend, a more

highly selective institution, a an institution located a greater distance from home, a private

(rather than a public) institution, and a four year institution.

 McDonough (1997) found that seniors enrolled private high school are significally more

likely than public school senior to enter college and enrolled in four year institution, even

when the track, ability levels, aspirations controlled. He attributes this to the difference

private and public high school explaining that average, private schools are smaller, have

different rules and expectations and have larger percentages of students in the academic

track than do public schools. Private school also help students develop their college

aspirations better than do public school through a greater proportion of counselors per

students, who encourage and influence a large proportion of their students in their college

planning.

 Hearn, 1984; Kolstad, 1979; Peters, 1977 even though the relationship is weak, there is

positive correlation between college attendance and graduating from a high school which

has a curriculum that includes more math, science and other preparatory courses. This

characteristics are held (Kolstad,1979) alexander et al (1978) have also found that

students who graduate from high-status high schools are more like to pursue higher

education even when ability are controlled.

12
Local studies

 Tinto (1993) classified students departures as: 1) institutional departures, and 2) system

departures. Institutional departures include students who left institutions and have

transferred to another institution (transfer), and students who temporally left school and

returned to higher education at a later date (stop outs). Tinto suggested that these actions

tends to overstate the number of students who fail to persist in the higher education

system.

 Hagedorn (2005) found that persistence and retention, while often used interchangeably

in the literature, are in fact not always an equal measure of student behavior. Students

may leave their original institutions, but remain in higher education and achieve their

individual goals. Some students may dropout temporarily and then return to their original

institutions, which is not addressed in this study. Hagedorn stated that retention is more

an institutional measure, while persistence is more of a student trait.

 According to the study conducted by Siguan Jr. (1994), it was found out that the students

self-concept showed no significant influence on their career preferences. The academic

achievements of student proved to be significant related to their career preferences. The

school were students came from had no influence on their choice of career. He

recommends that a more improved and functional guidance provided in school to help

students make sound career choices. The guidance services in school must be

collaborative efforts of the administrator, guidance counselors, and teachers. Classrooms

teachers are encouraged to do their best in improving teaching learning processes,

considering that academic achievement of student influences their career preferences.

 Another study conducted by Almerino ( 2003 ), it was found out that a big picture of a big

family with low educational attainment and inadequate investment was the sole foundation

13
of choosing a course, which was psychologically motivated. The respondent’s level of

preferred intelligence did not match to their chosen course. This could be drawn from the

required level of the course in contrast with their level of preferred intelligence. The

necessity of developing a career develop program was need in order to prevent any misfits

and to assist student in the process of crystalizing their career in life. She recommended

that this program be effectively implemented.

 Personal interests, abilities, skill and values are the most influential factors in coming

chosen occupation by the participant according to Pabiton (2007). This imply that like other

graduating students in senior high school the participants seemed to have chosen

occupation she also noted that the student be given all the chances to learn and develop

the skills and attitude required for various occupations, she recommends that career

counselors could give more emphasis in this environmental factors during individual and

small group career counseling.

Validity

This research is a formative validity because the outcome of this research will provide

information. For researchers, Parents and Students it will guide them on choosing a course, it

gives them information that they can use or basis on choosing a course. For the schools it will

provide them information that will help them to improve their school services offered.

Reliability

Inter-rater reliability might be employed when different college courses are evaluating

the degree to which marketing campaign meet certain standards. Inter-rater reliability is

especially useful when judgement can be considered relatively subjective. Thus, the use of this

type of reliability should probably be more likely evaluating college courses as opposed to

career path problem.

Gathering Procedure

The researchers used the following research instruments in gathering data:

Questionnaire – it was primary instrument used for this study. The queries are divided into three

categories namely: (a) Respondents’ Personal data, (b) Respondents’ College Course
