Ketamine

Ketamine is used for short-term analgesia and anesthesia induction. It works by blocking NMDA receptors in the central nervous system, stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. Common side effects include vivid dreams, confusion, hallucinations and increased blood pressure. It should not be used in patients with hypertension, heart disease, aneurysms or hyperthyroidism due to cardiovascular stimulation. Nursing management includes monitoring vital signs and providing supportive care.
