Module Aims
The aim of this module is to:
• Enable students to recognise the individual functions that constitute an organisation;
• Develop students' understanding of business markets, models and sectional diversity;
• Develop students' understanding of how business functions and processes need to
be integrated across the whole organisation;
• Develop a critically analytical approach to the appreciation of problems involved in
implementing strategic decisions and the difficulties of monitoring and controlling those
decisions.

Content Summary
Throughout the module learners will be introduced to the varying focus, key underpinning
concepts, ideas and approaches of different business functions and processes, including a
knowledge and understanding of:
• markets - the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services
• customers - customer expectations, service and orientation
• finance - the sources, uses and management of finance; the use of accounting and
other information systems for managerial applications
• people - the management and development of people within organisations
• operations - the management of resources and operations; information systems;
the development, management and exploitation of information systems and their
impact upon organisations
• communication and information technology (CIT)
• business policy and strategy - the development of appropriate policies and strategies within a
changing environment, to meet stakeholder interests
• The exploration of each business function and process will be underpinned by consideration
of pervasive issues including: sustainability, globalisation, corporate social responsibility,
diversity, business innovation, creativity, enterprise development, knowledge management and
risk management.
