Problem Set 2 (Geotechnical Engineering)

This document appears to be a problem set from a geotechnical engineering course. It contains 10 practice problems related to soil mechanics, asking students to calculate various properties of soil samples including moisture content, dry and wet unit weights, void ratio, porosity, degree of saturation, and relative density. Students are instructed to show their work and that no erasures are allowed on the solution.

Problem Set No. ____

(CIE 047 - Geotechnical Engineering 1 (Soil Mechanics))

Name: _______________________________________ Date: ________________

Year & Section: _______________________________

Instruction: Solve the following problems given below. Strictly NO ERASURES ALLOWED ON SOLUTION
ERASURES MEANS WRONG.

1. A sample of moist quart sand was obtained by carefully pressing sharpened hallow cylinder with a volume of 200
cu.cm. into the bottom of excavation. The sample was trimmed flush with the ends of the cylinder and found to be
425 g. In the laboratory the dry unit weight of the sand alone was found to be 240g and the weight of empty
cylinder is 75g. Laboratory test shows that emax=1.80 and emin=0.8 and GS=2.66. Calculate the moisture content,
void ratio, degree of saturation and the relative density of the soil.
2. In the natural state, a moist soil has a volume of 0.0093 m3 and weighs 177.6 N. The oven dry weight of the soil is 153.6N. If
GS=2.71, calculate the moisture content, moist unit weight, and dry unit weight.
3. A soil sample weighing 249kg is removed from a test pit. Water weighing 124kg will just fill the pit. A sample of the soil
weighing 113.2g is oven dried and its weight after oven drying is 98.7g. Maximum attainable dry unit weight of soil is
18.8kN/m3 and minimum attainable dry unit weight is 15.75kN/m3. Specific gravity of soil is 2.67. Determine the wet unit
weight , dry unit weight and relative density.
4. The moist mass of 2.8x10-3 m3 of soil is 5.53kg. If the moisture content is 10% and the specific gravity of soil
particles is 2.72, determine the moist density, dry density, void ratio, porosity, degree of saturation, volume
occupied by water.
5. A volume of undisturbed soil is 0.015m3 obtained from a construction site has a wet mass of 31kg and a dry mass
of 27.5kg. Gs = 2.71. Determine the void ratio, water content, degree of saturation and the saturated unit weight.
6. A 150cc sample of wet soil has a mass of 250g when oven dried the mass is 162g.
7. A dry sand is placed I a container having a volume of 0.0089 cc. The dry weight of the sample is 0.014g. Water is
carefully added to the container so as not to disturbed the condition of the sand. When the container is filled, the
combined weight of soil plus water is 0.0174g. Find the void ratio, porosity, water content, specific gravity,
saturated and dry unit weight.
8. A granular soil was tested in the laboratory and was found to have a maximum and minimum void ratio of 0.84
and 0.38 respectively. Gs=2.65, w=9% and moist unit weight of 18.64kN/m3. Compute the dry unit weight, void
ratio, and the relative density of the soil in the field.
9. The field unit weight of soil sample is 1960kg/m3, and the unit weight of the soil particle is 2700kg/m3. If
emax=0.69 and emin=0.44. Compute the dry unit weight if w=11%. Compute the void ratio and the relative
density of the soil sample.
10. The dry density of a soil is 1750kg/m3 Gs=2.66. Determine the moisture content when it is saturated , saturated
unit weight, dry unit weight and dry density.
