 ATP in R/3 deals majorly with the execution part of availability of a material and its components
Whereas GATP in APO is advanced function which involves availability checking of
components based on various rules, procedures which are very advanced and user friendly.
 GATP is mostly used in companies nowadays because of its least complexity and easy
to implement.
Regarding SAP book on ATP/GATP, SCM670 is the authorized material from SAP on
GATP.

Global ATP can be used in heterogeneous system landscapes to provide required information as quickly
as possible.

Global ATP is one of the central methods of SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (SAP APO) that
utilizes SAP live Cache A tool for processing large volumes of data in main memory, enabling data sharing
among several applications.

The ATP check – also known as the availability check – represents an online search that should ensure
that your company can provide the requested product at the requested time in the quantity requested
by the customer.

The check methods, which are also known to the ERP system, have been extended in SAP APO by the
following new methods, such as:

● Combination of Basic Methods

● Capable-to-Promise (CTP)
● Multilevel ATP Check
● Rules-Based ATP Check
● Correlation Calculation

The Explanation and Simulation of the Availability Check allows you to display the check results and
simulate the ATP check. You can also simulate Transportation and Shipment Scheduling there.

Below the one example scenario which explain the advantage of gATP over ATP in confirming the
order quantity against the sales order.

ATP
Situation: No stock on hand of Finished Goods. One existing Production order for Finished Goods for
100 widgets due to be completed on September 1.
Customer enters a Sales order for 500 widgets, requested delivery for August 10. During the order
entry process, the system automatically performs ATP. System looks for stock to fill the order.
Nothing. System looks for existing Production orders or Purchase orders. Finds the Production order
with 100 available. System confirms the sales order item: 100 widgets for delivery on September 1,
the balance of 400 confirmed for lead time on December 1.

GATP
The above scenario can be duplicated exactly, since GATP contains all the ATP functionality of R/3.
So, here is a slightly different version:
Situation: No stock on hand of Finished goods. No existing production orders.
Customer enters a Sales order for 500 widgets. during the order entry process, the system
automatically perform ATP. System looks for stock to fill the order. Nothing. System searches for
existing Production orders. Nothing. System searches for available manufacturing capacity and finds
the first unoccupied capacity (adequate to build 500 widgets) that can be used to fulfill the sales
order. System automatically creates a planned order, finitely schedules the planned order for 500
widgets, with a due date of September 7, which consumes the manufacturing capacity, and confirms
the Sales order item to September 7.

 GATP has advance method - multi level ATP, CTP and rule based ATP form which you can define rule and
check as per the check rule.
CTP functionality is used for automatic production trigger and confirmation of the date as per resource
detail scheduling.

 in GATP, you can combine the basic

methods (availability check and allocation) and define the
sequence for executing the checks as you required.
 When we carry out combined check methods using ATP and GATP,
system first checks out how much is actually available for
confirmation.
Based on confirmation or confirmed quantity, product allocation is
made. In GATP, you can also define the execution sequence of the
check methods as required in customizing which is unlikely in ATP.
The second available option is that in GATP we can carry out this
method in Simulation as well.
o In GATP, you can also define the execution sequence of the
check methods as required in customizing which is unlikely in ATP. But in R/3 also its checking
stock avalable if stock is more than sales order then its checking Product allocation Qty and Confiring
the Sales Order.

The aATP functionality enhances the standard availability check features. The
Standard S/4HANA ATP comprises the features for Product Availability Check and
rescheduling. The aATP provides release for Delivery, Allocation check and backorder
processing.
If sufficient quantity of a specific material and plant combination is available for all sales
documents and if no product allocation limitations exist, sales orders will not be changed during
the aATP process. When the confirmed date is reached, picking and outbound delivery can take
place. The product allocation check method in aATP enables you to apply sales rules (for
example, a fair-share or prioritized share logic) to sales order requirements competing for the
same material availability, to restrict available material quantities based on specific
characteristics of the sales order (for example, the sales organization or a specific business
partner). If the available quantity of a specific material-plant combination is restricted and
therefore insufficient to fulfill concurrent sales documents, backorder processing can be
performed.

Business Benefits

 Allows Product Allocation Check, and Backorder Processing in addition to the

classical product availability execution of Release for Delivery,
 Responds quickly and accurately to orders and provide commitments in real time
 Plans and manages allocations in shortage situations
 Automatically reschedules orders
 Makes informed decisions to change confirmations

Key Process Flows

 Maintain Product Allocation and manage Product Allocation Planning Data

 Maintain, schedule, and monitor BOP run
 Run Release for Delivery to change confirmations on sales orders
interactively before releasing to delivery
 Run advanced ATP check with product availability check and product allocation
check within for example, the Sell from Stock process after sales order creation

 Backorder Processing
 Use
 Backorder processing in SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (SAP APO) fulfils a basic
requirement of Supply Chain Management: changing confirmed quantities and dates/times as
part of the ATP Check. You use backorder processing to process requirements entered, and to
diagnose and cancel backorder situations.
 You can use backorder processing to redistribute confirmed quantities according to priorities,
and to override results of the ATP Check. The following functions are available to you as part of
backorder processing:

 ● Batch Backorder Processing

 ● Interactive Backorder Processing
 In the following situations, you execute backorder processing interactively or schedule it in the
background (regularly, if necessary):

 ● After a Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling planning run, a Supply

Network Planning run, or after changes in the location-specific product master
data for Global ATP
 ● After a changed availability situation
 ● After the arrival of orders that have priority
 Activities
 Within backorder processing, the system selects items from SD documents and stock transfer
documents depending on the filter and a sorter, and brings them into a sequence.
 An ATP check is then performed for the items.
 The check date for backorder processing is always today’s date.
 SAP APO transfers the backorder processing results to the connected SAP system. The SD
document is automatically updated in the SAP system, meaning that the document is changed.
The data for the requirement (requested quantity, requested delivery date/time) is retained.
The changes to the document relate to the confirmed quantity and the confirmed date. When
stock transport orders are updated, the requested delivery date/time may be shifted into the
future, depending on the confirmation situation. If you use SAP ERP Central Component
(SAP ECC) as of release 6.0 the requested delivery date/time is not shifted into the future.

Back Order Processing Steps

 Identify the business criteria that will be used to prioritize demand (order creation date,
delivery priority, customer segment, MAD, etc.)

 Define the filter options that will be used. (sales orders, STOs, deliveries, etc.)
 Define sort profiles to re-distribute available once the filter is applied. (location, product,
customer segment, MAD, etc.)
