Johann Sebastian Bach – Toccata in G Major BWV 916
Unlike many other Bach’s compositions, the Toccatas did not have an exact date of compositions.
However, Toccata in G Major is most likely to be written during his Weimar years unlike the last two
Toccatas which is likely to be dated from the Cöthen period. The lost copy of Heinrich Gerber
entitled this piece as ‘Concerto seu Toccata pour le Clavecin”. Although 'clavecin' may refer to
clavichord or harpsichord, but there is no specific indication which added another option for the
organ as a medium. It was in the Weimar period as well that Bach is being indulged in Italian-style
concerto, which is reflected in the first movement the difference in texture that imply the
alternation between ‘ritornello’ and ‘soloist’ section.
Sergei Rachmaninoff – Etude Tableaux Op.33
Like many other composers, Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff has his personal prime time
for composition. His forte was writing in a programmatic style which illustrates arts, poetry or
painting. Rachmaninoff explain to his biographer that this etude has a special name Etude
Tableaux as it is derived from mainly on a real or visionary character. These character are closely
related to Arnold Böcklin works which as inspired a number of Rachmaninoff works. This can be
confirmed as they were both emphasis on Romanticism and Poeticism in their works, in addition
Rachmaninoff once visited Böcklin’s exhibition in Germany and was deeply impressed. Op.33
No.7 portrayed a scene of a country fair as actors steps on the stage for a performance.
Joseph Haydn – Sonata in C# minor, Hob. XVI:36
This sonata in written in 1771, it can be regarded as one of the early compositions of Haydn for the
piano. The piece is written in the key of c# minor, which often relates to mellow or sorrow mood.
While Haydn, in this compositional style of scherzo, wrote this piece with full excitement and joyful
character. Hence, this piece was said to reflect the Strum und Drang style which also means rebel
as he wrote the piece in way that breaks the norm of the character of c# minor. The excitement is
created through the long pauses that creates tension and curiosity to the listener.
William Bolcom – Nine New Bagatelles
This set of nine bagatelles were written in 2006, 14 years after the first set entitled ‘Nine Bagatelles”.
These piece were commissioned by the Music Teacher Association of California. At the end of
each short piece there is a short description that can help to interpret the meaning behind. The
whole set of Bagatelles depicts a story that reflects our life. The first two depicts curiosity and
enjoyment, the third shows enjoyment, the following 3 shares sweet memories and tuneful
melody, the sixth depicts determination and strong will, seventh shows religious belief and last is
death. Overall, through out the set it shows the circle of life where in the end we cannot avoid
death.
