Relay Fundamentals

A simple relay circuit uses a coil to open and close contacts, allowing a heavy current from a starter motor to flow through the contacts while only a small current is needed to energize the coil. The coil is energized by a switch, causing the contacts to close and connect the heavy current load of the starter motor to batteries through the contacts while only drawing a small current through the coil.
