II. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. Determine the position of the given points in the Cartesian coordinate plane.
2. Plot the points on the Cartesian plane.
3. Read coordinates for a point from a graph

a. Checking of Attendance
b. Checking of Assignment

B. Activity
Before we proceed to our next topic, let’s us have first an activity, this activity is in the form of a
game which will help you recall the concept of number line. The game title is “Bowowow!”
Directions: Do as directed.
1. Group yourselves into 9 or 11 members.
2. Form a line facing your classmates.
3. Assign integers which are arranged from least to greatest to each group member from
left to right.
4. Assign zero to the group member at the middle.
5. Recite the number assigned to you.
6. Bow as you recite and when the last member is done reciting, all of you bow together
and say Bowowow!

C. Analysis

1. What is the number line composed of?

2. Where is zero found on the number line?
3. What integers can be seen on the left side of zero?
4. What about on the right side of zero?
5. Can you draw a number line?

D. Abstraction.
1. Integers
2. Centre or in the middle
3. Negative numbers
4. Positive numbers

E. Discussion
Our lesson for today is about Cartesian coordinate system.
The Cartesian coordinate system was developed by the mathematician Descartes during
an illness. As he lay in bed sick, he saw a fly buzzing around on the ceiling, which was made of
square tiles. As he watched he realized that he could describe the position of the fly by the
ceiling tile he was on. After this experience he developed the coordinate plane to make it easier
to describe the position of objects.
Coordinate plane is a plane with a point selected as an origin, some length selected as a
unit of distance, and two perpendicular lines that intersect at the origin, with positive and
negative direction selected on each line. Traditionally, the lines are called x (drawn from left to
right, with positive direction to the right of the origin) and y (drawn from bottom to top, with
positive direction upward of the origin). Coordinates of a point are determined by the distance of
this point from the lines, and the signs of the coordinates are determined by whether the point is
in the positive or in the negative direction from the origin

Converting a plane into a Cartesian plane

1. Construct two real number lines perpendicular to each other at the 0 point of each line.
• Label this point of intersection as O for Origin.
• This divides the plan into four quadrants, labeled QI, QII, QIII and QIV.
2. The horizontal number line is called the x-axis.
3. The vertical number line is called the y-axis.
4. A grid is formed from the whole numbers on each number line.
5. Thus, establishing a 1-1 mapping between the points in the plane and ordered pairs of real
numbers (x, y)
 X-coordinate is often called the abscissa
 Y-coordinate is often called the ordinate
To find the coordinates of a point.
1. Draw a line from the point perpendicular to the x-axis.
The point where the line intersects the x-axis is the x-coordinate.
2. Draw a line from the point perpendicular to the y-axis.
The point where the line intersects the y-axis is the y-coordinate
 All points in Q1 always have positive values for their x-coordinate and y-
coordinate.
 All points in QII have x-coordinates that are negative and y-coordinates that are
positive.
 All points in QIII have x-coordinates that are negative and y-coordinates that are
negative.
 All points in QIV have x-coordinates that are positive and y-coordinates that are
negative.
 Points on the x-axis have a y-coordinate of 0.
 Points on the y-axis have a x-coordinate of 0.
 So, points on either axes belong to no quadrant
The Cartesian plane is composed of six sets of points: QI, QII, QIII, QIV, x-axis, and y-
axis. Therefore, the x-axis and y-axis are not part of any quadrant.
Origin is the sets do not have any points in common, except for 1 point that is in two of
the sets.
F. Application
(Through Flashcards) Direction: Determine where the location or position of the given
coordinates is.
1. (0, 2) 6. (4, -7)
2. (3, 3) 7. (5, 0)
3. (9, 1) 8. (0, 0)
4. (-2, -6) 9. (-4, 5)
5. (-9, 8) 10. (7, -2)

G. Generalization
1. What is Cartesian coordinate system?
2. How Rene Decartes discover it?
3. What is the rule in;
 Quadrant I?
 Quadrant II?
 Quadrant III?
 Quadrant IV?

H. Valuing
“Every journey begins with just one step. If you fall to take the first step, you go nowhere”.
Explain and relate the quotations in our topic for today

I. Evaluation/Assessment

Puzzle Worksheet: Practice coordinates graphing in a fun way.

The Graphing Worksheet will produce a four quadrant coordinate grid and a set of
ordered pairs that when correctly plotted and connected will produce different characters.
The students may select which one of the characters they wish to make.

The graphing puzzles contain over 40 ordered pairs to plot, divided into 3 to 16 different
shapes. For each shape plot the ordered pairs on the axis and connect them in order.
Options;
 Jack-O-Lantern
 Halloween Ghost
 Gingerbread Man
 Pilgrim Hat
 Thanksgiving Pumpkin
 Halloween Witch
 Halloween Bat
 Halloween Black Cat
IV. Assignment

A. Answer Let’s Try in your book on pages 96-97. Letter A and B only.

B. Study on how relation and function works.
