"Joker" and Mental Illness

The author saw the movie "Joker" knowing it would depict mental illness. As someone who has bipolar disorder, she found the movie disturbing but well-acted. She acknowledges the movie shows Arthur's untreated mental illness driving him to violence, which may upset or offend some viewers with mental illnesses. However, she believes Arthur's case is extremely rare and hopes the movie does not promote false stereotypes about mentally ill people being dangerous. The purpose of the article is to inform readers about how the movie portrays mental illness without telling them whether or not to see it.
