Title: UNDER VOLTAGE AND OVER VOLTAGE PROTECTION SYSTEM
Introduction
An over voltage is defined as an increase in the r.m.s value of the voltage up to a
level between 1.1 pu to 1.8 pu at power frequency for periods ranging from a half cycle
to a minute and a voltage which is below the optimum operational or rated value of a
component, circuit or device is called an under voltage. A serious problem that we
encounter in our household as well as in the industry is sudden fluctuation in voltage that
causes losses in electrical circuits. These losses cause low power factor in the supply
and by much amount of power is going to be wasted. Fluctuations may significantly
impact the power quality as well as the reliability of other voltage controlling devices.
Due to this fluctuation, various costly and previous equipments may get damaged.
Under and over voltage protection circuit protects household items and other
electrical appliances from abnormal voltage conditions. By the name itself, we can say
that if the input voltage is more or less than the required voltage then the electrical
appliance gets turned off and it gets disconnected from its respective power supply. This
voltage protection is designed to develop a under voltage and over voltage tripping
mechanism to protect a load from any damage. In many of the households and
industries fluctuation in AC mains supply take place frequently. To overcome this serious
problem, we can construct a protection system of under voltage and over voltage to
protect the loads from undue damage. This study focus to protect the equipment in case
of under voltage or over voltage and the study of under voltage and over voltage, various
power quality issues.
