Communication is very important especially if you have misunderstanding with

Appearance is not important. We should not judge a person by their looks and

"Federigo's Falcon" from The Decameron by
Giovanni Boccaccio
Summary:
The story of Federigo's Falcon from The Decameron is about a rich
young man named Federigo Alberighi from Florence. He fell in love with a girl
named Monna Giovanna who was considered as the loveliest and most adorable
woman to be found in Florence. At some point, he was very wealthy and madly
in love with Monna so he spent all his riches trying to impress her, but Monna
didn't took a glance of him. Eventually, he lost all his wealth and left nothing
other than a tiny farm and his falcon with the finest breed in the whole world.
Monna married a rich man and has a son with it. Federigo decided to leave the
place and start living simply.
One day, Monna's husband get sick, her husband left all his riches to
Monna and her son before he died. Leaving Monna a widow, every summer her
son and her came to visit near Federigo's farm. Consequently, Monna's son
became friends with Federigo and his falcon. Suddenly, Monna's son became
sick and asked for one request: Federigo's Falcon. Monna was taken aback
because Federigo had been in loved with her for a long time and she never give
a single glance of it. But for her son, she went to Federigo's house unannounced.
Federigo realized that he doesn't have suitable food for this worthy lady.
Without further thought, he killed his falcon and roasted it.
Monna explained her intention while they are eating. Suddenly, Federigo
burst into tears unable to give what Monna wants. He explained everything to
Monna. She felt upset, losing all hope of getting her son better, she thanked
Federigo for his hospitality then she left. Few days later, Monna's son died.
After mourning, her brothers urged her to remarry. She then said she would
marry Federigo. Her brothers allegedly disagree with her because Federigo has
no wealth. She then told her brothers, "I would rather have a man who needs
money, than a money who needs a man."
Seeing that her mind is all made up, Federigo and Monna married each
other and lived with happiness to the end of their days.
Reflection:
I have learned in the story that love conquers everything, and
sacrifice means love. In the story, Federigo sacrificed big for Monna
without asking in return, and that's love. Also, the story taught me to
become humble and kind, be humble for you will receive more than
what you expected. Love and kindness will forever be the key to a
happy and successful life.

Summary:
Jesse M. Robredo became the Commencement Speaker for the Ateneo de
Manila University for the Class of 2003. Robredo's speech contents about
everything he had been through. He talked about having strong heart, changing
paradigms, dramatic rebound, participatory governance, making heroes out of
the ordinary, small fish in a big pond and the child in us.
At first, he shared his journey on how he got involved in politics, then he
talked about how a strong heart overcame the situations of the people in Naga
and how he organized it.
His speech continued about his greatest achievement with the security of
5,000 squatter families with the help of Kaantabay sa Kauswagan Program. He
shared about how the government had a dramatic rebound for Naga. He even
said that the youths will be leaders of our country someday.
He closed his speech by telling the graduates to never forget the child in
them and keep in their hearts the Ateneo idealism of being men and women for
others.
Reflection:
It has been an inspiring speech brought by one of the greatest
people I've known. Jesse has so many contributions in the City Of
Naga. I am amazed by how he became an inspiration to others. Public
serving is one of the hardest things to do, yet Jesse still gives hope
and light to everything. His achievements and Naga's improvement
made me realize that a good leader has a strong heart, heart of
volunteerism. At this early age of mine, I already experienced being a
leader, and Jesse's speech helped me to be able to carry things
positively. His speech helped improve the continuity of my learning.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
Summary:
The story is about Quasimodo, a pope of fools who shares the same fate
of being accused with a gypsy street dancer, La Esmeralda. During the 1482,
festival of fools in Paris, Frollo was tempted to La Esmeralda's beauty and
decided to attack and follow her to her house, suddenly Quasimodo was there to
help but he got knocked out and captured by Frollo. In return for what
Quasimodo does, La Esmeralda offered to save his life by marrying him for four
years. Few months later, Phoebus saw La Esmeralda dancing in front of Notre
Dame and called her. They planned to meet each other after the party but being
the jealous Frollo, he watched them together while planning to trap La
Esmeralda. But later that night, Frollo stabs Phoebus over and over again but he
escaped and La Esmeralda was caught by the King's Guard.
After that, La Esmeralda falsely confessed to killing Phoebus and being a
witch. She was told to be executed in the Palace de Gréve. Frollo tried to
confess his love for La Esmeralda but he only received hate. Quasimodo saved
La Esmeralda from the execution by carrying her back in the Cathedral. But in
the end he didn't save La Esmeralda. After that, Quasimodo was never seen
again but years after when a grave digger, digged the remains of La Esmeralda,
he found a skeleton of a hunchback encircled around her.
Reflection:
One of the lessons I learned from reading the novel The
Hunchback of Notre Dame is that of not judging others by
appearances. We may be humans, we made mistakes but we should
also limit ourselves when it comes to the people around us. We may
be see someone who is happy in the outside, but we didn't know if
that person is happy when he/she is alone, only means that we have
individual differences and we should learn to appreciate, respect and
think before you speak.
The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas
Summary:
The story of a poor but noble young man, D'Artagnan, arrives in Paris
from Gascony to earn fortune. On his way to Paris, he was robbed and the letter
of introduction for Treville was taken from him. Afterwards, he saw the person
who robbed him and chased him. He offends three musketeers --- Athos,
Parthos and Aramis. He joined forces with the three but immediately stopped by
the Cardinal's guard then unfriended each other.
One day, he was asked for help. D'Artagnan was tasked to rescue
Madame Bonacieux and unexpectedly discovered the secret affair between
Bonacieux and Duke. He helped the queen regain the diamond tags. Then he
saw Milady, the Cardinal's vile companion and he was attracted by her beauty.
D'Artagnan got furious when he was fooled by Milady, he took revenge
with the musketeers. Another secret was discovered, Milady was Atho's wife,
whom they believe dead a long time ago. The musketeers joined forces together
to execute Milady. Consequently, D'Artagnan became the lieutenant in the
King's Musketeers. After offering the commission to Althos, Parthos and
Aramis, which they all refused, D'Artagnan accepts the prestigious commission
at the early age of twenty-one.
Reflection:
This story implies unity. You wouldn't know who will be there
for you every time, so if you have someone who can rely on, ask
some help and unite. Having some helping hands in one another can
create a big impact in someone's friendship. I learned that friendship
is unity because you can't work if there's no unity, and friendship is
made in that unity.
The Plague by Albert Camus
Summary:
In the town of Oran, thousands of rats died in the streets. The authorities
responds by collecting and cremating the dead rats, unaware that this is the
cause of the spread of bubonic plague in their area. Dr. Bernard Rieux together
with his fellow doctors and authorities formulated a theory after a reported case
of death. It was strengthen when more and more deaths came, there is an
epidemic.
The authorities slowly gave their attention to the problem. A special ward
is opened at the hospital but it suddenly filled with people and has no facilities
left. The town is sealed off and the town gates are shut down. It reaches to the
point where the use of telephone is restricted to only urgent calls. People tried to
escape the town and some are shot by armys.
Months after, a Castel's new anti-plague serum is tried for the first time,
but still not enough to cure everyone. Paneloux, a volunteer gives a second
sermon to not give up and fight the epedemic. The epedemic stopped during the
late January after Grand catches the plague and instructs Rieux to burn all his
papers. The townspeople rejoiced and begin to go back to their old habits. In
February, the authorities brought back the operations of the gates and
communication.
Reflection:
"There is more to admire than to despise in humans" the line
means that we should have trust and faith to one another. No matter
what hardships the world has to offer, you can surpass it by having
faith and strong heart to fight. You will fail and fall down but you
should keep in mind that there is always hope. You just need a little
more sacrifice for you to begin again. This only reminds us that there
is always a rainbow after the storm.
