Synchronous Motor Condenser

This document contains 4 examples of calculating power factors and equipment ratings for electrical systems. In the first example, a factory needs to improve its power factor from 0.6 to 0.95 lagging through the addition of a synchronous condenser. The condenser would need to be rated at 1807.8 kVA and the total kVA of the factory would be 1894.9 kVA.

POWER  SYSTEM  DEVICES  AND  APPARATUS
TUTORIAL  –  SYNCHRONOUS  MOTOR  AS  CONDENSER

1.   A   factory   has   a   total   load   of   1800   kW   at   a   power   factor   of   0.6   lagging.   If   it   is   desired   to
improve   the   power   factor   to   0.95   lagging   with   the   installation   of   a   synchronous   condenser,
calculate
  i.     the  kVA  rating  of  the  condenser.
ii.   total  kVA  of  the  factory.
[1807.8  kVA,  1894.9  kVA]

2.   A   factory   has   an   average   load   of   300   kW   at   a   power   factor   of   0.6   lagging.   A   synchronous
motor  with  an  efficiency  of  88%  is  used  to  raise  the  combined  power  factor  to  0.9  lagging  and
at  the  same  time  supply  a  mechanical  load  of  60  kW.  Calculate
  i.     total  load  kVA
ii.   kVA  capacity  of  the  synchronous  motor
iii.   synchronous  motor  operating  power  factor
[409.1  kVA,  231.95  kVA,  0.294  leading]

3.   A  substation  operating  at  full  load  of  1000  kVA  supplies  a  load  of  power  factor  0.71  lagging.
Calculate   the   permissible   additional   load   at   this   power   factor   and   the   rating   of   the   ideal
synchronous  condenser  to  raise  the  substation  power  factor  to  0.87  lagging.
[225.4  kVA,  370  kVA]

4.   An   industrial   plant   takes   a   load   of   4   MW   at   power   factor   0.8   lagging   from   a   power   system
network. It   has   been   decided   to   replace   one   400   kW   induction   motor   by   a   synchronous   motor
of   the   same   rating   in   order   to   raise   the   power   factor   of   the   plant. Both   induction   and
synchronous  motors  have  efficiency  of  90%.  The  induction  motor  operates  at  power  factor  0.9
lagging   but   synchronous   motor   is   designed   to   operate   at   power   factor   0.8   leading.   Find   the
new  power  factor  of  the  plant.  Calculate  also  the  percentage  reduction  in  line  current  due  to
this  change.
[0.853  lagging,  6.2%]
