Sample map exploration guide
This document will guide you through a first exploration of Geoconcept via this sample map
of Bombay region in India. For a more in-depth discovery of Geoconcept 7 we encourage
you to refer to our user guide.
1. Getting started
Once Geoconcept is installed in your system, you can open the
sample map either by double clicking on the .gcm file, or from inside
Geoconcept, clicking on the Open option.
2. Exploring the basics
This section presents the basic functions of Geoconcept, from selection to object properties
and appearances.
How to navigate the map
Apart from the usual panning and zooming
tools, you can play around with scales, and
also save specific positions. In this sample map we have
saved a number of map positions for users to navigate
quickly between the thematic layers we have prepared.
How to select objects
To select objects in Geoconcept, click on the object you want to select. In case
there are several objects located in the same space, a list of all the overlapping
objects will appear and you need to select the one you are interested in.
How to modify objects appearances
To change the appearance of an
object you can explore the
display manager of Geoconcept. There all
the objects classes and subclasses are
listed with their visibility (eye symbol),
selectability (arrow symbol) and
appearance specified at each of the 12
scales.
How to change objects properties
The configurator is the heart of Geoconcept GIS. There you can create new
classes and subclasses of objects, new fields, and configure how information
about the object is going to be displayed.
You can also access objects' information
by double clicking on the object, action
which prompts the object form to appear.
Try it yourself: You can see for instance
(in the info box tab) that we have
configured the info box for the ward to
display class,
subclass, name,
area and number
of households.
3. Access to information
Queries
Geoconcept search wizard lets users parameter both topological and attribute
search criteria within one system.
Try it yourself: we have pre-configured a number of queries on
the wards of Bombay, you can run them yourself after selecting
a ward / group of wards or you can explore how those queries
have been parameterized in the search wizard.
Object Lists
The list function enables users to
display object information in a
table form. Field displayed can be
chosen via the list configurator.
4. Visualisation
To demonstrate the different data visualisation options in Geoconcept, we have created a
number of thematic layers you can access in the different view tabs.
Thematic layers
To view the sample thematic layer we have prepared, go to the LPG vs Kerosene
view tab, and select the "Greater Mumbai" position.
This thematic layer shows the sales of LPG
and Kerosene in each ward of Mumbai in a
Histogram / bar chart format.
You can see how the thematic layer has
been created by double clicking on the
thematic layer in the display manager (below
the wards objects).
Networks
Geoconcept has a wizard dedicated
to the creation of network flows, and
associated thematic layers. In the
view tab called "networks" you will
see an example of network flow
thematic layer over Maharashtra.
Go to the "Network_View" position
for an optimal viewing experience.
4D
The innovative 4D feature of Geoconcept enable users to display
thematic layers with a time dimension. Here we have prepared two
4D animations. Go to the 4D view tab and chose the "Greater Mumbai"
position. In the 4D Manager, click on one of the 2 animations available.
Legends
You can view the map legends by going to the "windows" ribbon
and clicking on the legend button. Scroll down to "map legend" to view the
entire map legend.
5. Navigation
Navigation functions of Geoconcept are accessible in the Routing ribbon.
Calculate a route
To calculate a route select start point and end
point with optional intermediary points and click
on "calculate route". Note that the sample graph which we
have given is based on OSM data and is not 100%
accurate.
Once a route is calculated you can
view the associated route sheet by
clicking on the "route sheet" icon.
Isochrones/Isodistance
To view the isochrones and isodistance
examples present in this map, go to the
respective isochrone and isodistance view
tabs and choose the "greater Mumbai"
position.
You can create your own isochrones using the
dedicated wizard. You will need to indicate the
location of the graph file (.siti).
6. Reporting
The sample map contains a sample report template from which you can generate reports on
the wards of Mumbai.
To generate a sample pdf report on a ward of
Mumbai, select the ward of your choice. Then go to
the home button, reports, then Generate reports. A
wizard prompt appears where generation options are displayed.
Select the report template
(ward_report.repx) and a
destination folder and
keep default options as
shown in the image on
the left.
Thanks you for taking the time to explore
Geoconcept.
You can find more information about all the Geoconcept functions in the Reference Guide

Map Credits
The following layers from this map have
been taken from OSM: road networks,
land use and land cover, POIs.
The ward layer has been digitalized in-house from freely available online government
sources. The socio-economic information associated with the wards was sourced from the
Mumbai Human development report published by the municipal corporation of Mumbai in
2009.
