Three Common Causes of The Students’ English Writing Anxiety

According to (Hjortshoj, 2001), writing anxiety is an informal term for a

wide variety of apprehensive and pessimistic feelings about writing. Most of the
students feel the anxiety in English writing. Sometimes having some level of
anxiety associated with writing is often a sign that we care about doing well. In
other words, writing anxiety is situational. It can happen or not based on someone
capability. Moreover, there are three factors that can be the reasons why students
feel this way. Those include perfect work, linguistics understanding, and lack of
self-confidence due to past writing experiences.

First, English writing anxiety is caused by pressure of work to be done

perfectly. Perfect work creates a good score. Students want good scores to proof
that they are good in writing. They are try to create the perfect one but ended up
by stressing themselves to finish the work. It is because they force themselves too
much to make it, but forget about their capability.

Second, students writing anxiety is caused by linguistics difficulties. The

most basic problem is grammar. Students are often confuse to use right tenses in
their writing. They also have problems in structural relations between words or
phrases. Students often feel frustrating when they cannot decide the appropriate
words, tenses, and punctuation in their writing work.

Last, students thinking about criticism they have received in the past. This
thing will make them not confident to write. They will thinking that their writing
is always bad and it will cause them no longer want to write in English.

To conclude, having English writing anxiety does not mean students are
bad in writing. Students only need the suitable way in writing skill. Students’ skill
is developed by writing in new situation. Not every format will be right for them,

but they won’t know which ones might be right until they try it. They will gain as
many skills in that area as they can, and when they finish the apprenticeship,
decide which of the skills they learned will serve them well later on.
