Sagrada Familia Plumbing Services had accepted 9 OJT Trainees; all are
from Cebu Institute of Technology-University. We are regrouped and assigned to
2 different sites--- Mandue and Ayala.

November 28, 2018 We had our safety orientation and things to be

considered regarding with the logbooks and site
designation, together with the HR Manager and
Safety Officer and all the OJT Trainees.

Nov. 29 – Dec. 7, 2018 On our first day, I, together with 5 other trainees from
CIT-U, was assigned to Midpoint Residences a two-
tower high-rise residential condominium complex with
28-storey located in Banilad, Mandaue City. We were
introduced to the Project manager we were to study
the structural and architectural plans and observe the
things done on actual. Engr. Sabandal also gave
inputs regarding with the designs of beams and also
recalled the lessons we had on school, evaluating of
what we had learned so far on school.

Dec. 11 – Dec. 14, 2018 Together with my co-trainee, we are to check the
dimensions for the specific units of each floors of this
28-storey residential building, and observing the daily
activities of the site which is installation of CHB at
septic tank, installation of pipes on each specific
building, installation of rafter on each specific building,
and matting of rebar’s at specific buildings.

Dec. 17– Dec. 21, 2018 On my 3rd week on the site. Together with my co-
trainee we were assigned to observed the daily
activities of the workers such as pouring of concrete
cement at specific buildings, installation of rafter at
other buildings, installation of rebars of column at
residential building, checking the number of bolts
delivered, installation of culvert between 2 buildings,
and installation of sagrod at fitness building.

Jan. 9 – Jan. 18, 2019 Together with my co-trainee our 4th week we were
assigned to observed the workers with their daily
activities such as installation of pipes for the fire
protection on specific floors, painting the pipes to
avoid rusting, installation of concrete pedestal at
residential building, installation of CHB for retaining
wall at residential building, installation of fahst wall
and bubble insulation, and installing of the designated
dimension of fahst wall at the t&b of the finished
building.

Jan. 23 – Jan. 25, 2018 We were assigned to count the number of tiles
delivered, measured the sizes/dimension of the tiles,
observed the erecting of foundation on the
commercial building, matting of rebars at
multipurpose building, installing of doors and windows
at each units of this 28-storey residential building.

Jan. 29 – Feb. 7, 2019 we were assigned for the billing from the masonry
division we measure their finish works throughout the
week. Such as measuring the pilings of the CHB’s
and plasters from the headers to the CR’s to the
hallways and walls of each units and floors of this 28-
storey residential condominium building.

Feb. 12 – Feb. 20, 2019 For my last week in fulfillment of our 240 hours, we
are still assigned to observed the daily activities of the
workers such as attaching of tiles of the each units
and floors, and applying skim coat on each finished
floors. The activities seems the same for each floors
because of it’s the same floor plan, the dimensions of
some units in every floor because there are some 2
units that is submerge into one unit. And also
because some the owner of each condominium
wanted a bigger space.
V. COMPANY PROBLEMS
A. As perceived by the Company
According to Mr. Daculan himself, being a small-time contractual
company, one of the problems he is facing right now is the lack of capital
to expand his business especially the workforce. Despite the huge number
of clients that are interested in his services, he is still looking for ways to
expand his resources to cater the needs of a company expansion.

B. As perceived by the Trainee

I don’t have the right to say that an attitude of a leader or the way it
may handle its worker and fellow employee would give a problem to the
company because it’s their own way of dealing their own company. But as
our own perspective, somehow, for me, a leader should be approachable
and must not impose a frightening attitude to the employee since it may
affect the performance of the worker and the latter, affects the company
itself. I don’t think it is right to give insights of how the company head
handle its employee because it’s their own company that their risking but
rather I will just give recommendations for the improvement of my
observation.

VI. OJT-TRAINEE CONCERNS

A. Things learned During the OJT
Aside from dealing with computations and estimations as a Civil
Engineering Trainee, there are things, such as attitude and character, to
be considered on building one’s self on the training aspects. During the
On-The-Job Training program, I’ve improved my skills and abilities and
used those attitudes needed for the improvement of my performance.
Here are things, I believe, I have improved as a trainee:

Adaptable with the environment

For me, as a soon-to-be Engineer, it is necessary to know the place
you’re working and how to adapt or adjust thy self on the working area. As
for me and for us, trainee, it is actually a key to adapt with the environment
to have a good performance. As for our company, we are to have a
rotation and so, we are assigned to different sites and by means we have
to adjust ourselves upon dealing the rotation.

Interaction Skills and Teamwork

In a big project or area, in order to accomplish things set by goal, it

is also a key to have a good communication team with your workmates.
And as for me, a trainee, it is important to have a good communication
with my co-trainee and the worker or people on the company. It is also
observed to be careful with words to be talked because in the working
area, respect to one another is also needed.

Self and Time Management

In a big company, it is also necessary to have a good impression of

self in the eye of the heads and leaders of the company. By means, it will
be impressive of one to have a good time management and be punctual
on the working area. It is also necessary to have a self-management to
have a better communication with other workers. One should compose
himself to be understood by others and as trainee, we are also bringing
the school name in every activities that we do.

Subject Knowledge and Problem Solving Skills

As a trainee, it would be necessary, too, to apply the knowledge

learned from the Alma Mater. As perceived by us, site engineers, as our
mentor, would ask questions regarding with some theoretical insights,
afterwards application on actual activities would follow. And so, to have a
good impression to the leaders, it is to answer each questions, based on
what have learned, precisely and honestly. If sometimes, we trainee
couldn’t answer, we ask questions and ask for clarifications if needed
since this is the purpose of the training.

B. Ways to Improve the OJT Program

I can’t see any problem with how the OJT program works because
from the start of the OJT seminar down to our way of ending it, somehow,
the NLO has been a student-friendly. It hasn’t caused any hassle to the
students taking the OJT subject and somehow, the checklist, provided by
the NLO, had imposed a step-by-step procedure to fellow student of CIT-U
and had made impact to me that OJT is really one of their priorities. It
gives us a smooth way to accomplish everything we need and the likes.
Overall, within this brief explanation, I would like to extend our greatest
gratitude to NLO for having an systematic way of processing the
documents for students.

VII. OVER-ALL COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

- It would be best to have PPE’s provided by each company since it is most
concern from students. Our company is quite good because they provide
steel-toes and hard hats to the trainee.
- It would be better to have proper designation and task or more like a
syllabus to each company so it wouldn’t be just about full observation and
curiosity to the trainee.
