Good Morning, Did You Know What?

Deforestation is a major environmental issue causing soil erosion, greenhouse gas emissions, and species extinction. The main drivers of deforestation are agricultural expansion for crops like palm oil, illegal logging which degrades ecosystems, and illegal mining. Deforestation accounts for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is projected to cause 28,000 species to go extinct in the next 25 years if not curtailed. Potential solutions include stricter laws against illegal logging, expanding protected forest areas, and community reforestation efforts.

1. Good morning, did you know what?

“80% of global warming comes from livestock and deforestation”

A British activist Heather Mills said.
That’s terrible.
2. My name is Ngoc Hai from Pre-Intermediate 1.
You know, environmental degradation is a serious issue: desert,
deforestation and drought.
One of the major reasons is DEFORESTATION.
Today, let’s examine 3 vital factors contributing to destruction of forests and
3 negative impacts in several countries.
3. I have divided my topic into 5 sections:
First of all, that’s definition.
Next, I’m talking about causes and effects
After that, evaluation
And finally, conclusion.
4. Now, let’s begin by DEFINITION.
Intentional destruction for agricultural, commercial, housing, or firewood
use.
Without replanting and allowing time for the forest to regenerate itself.
5. Well, let me turn to CAUSES of deforestation.
Firstly, agricultural land conversion is the biggest driver of global forest
clearance.
To be specific, Indonesia is the largest producer and exporter of crude palm
oil worldwide with 15 hectares of land.
Therefore, farmers have to destroy huge patches of lowland forest to make
more space.
6. The second point is illegal logging covering 10% of deforestation.
That activity degrades ecosystem and steal enormous resources and income
from governments.
In Amazon rainforest, Peru, approximately 1,100 square miles of forest is
cleared every year – 80% of them illegally.
7. The third point is illegal mining – a considerable driver of deforestation.
In Venezuela, mining devastated 5,266 square km of natural vegetation from
2000 to 2015.
That contributed to generating the dragging of sediment to the rivers.
A change in the ecosystem at the same time.
8. Next, let’s move on to 3 negative impacts from these causes.
The first one I want to mention is soil erosion.
Many plants: coffee, cotton, palm oil and rice replace natural vegetation.
As a result, the land is swept into rivers by rains and blown away by winds.
According to a research, a third of the world’s arable land has been lost since
1960 due to soil erosion.
9. The second is greenhouse gas emission from deforestation.
In fact, tropical forests hold over 228 to 247 gigations of carbon.
However, increasing emission from forest clearance contributes to high
temperature & causing extreme events: drought, landslides and storms.
As reported by WWL, deforestation takes responsibility of about 15% of all
GGE in the world.
10.Last not but least, you know we have 44,838 species including all the
endangered.
Due to deforestation, there’re up to 28000 species expected to become
extinct by next 25 years.
If we loss this figure, there’re only 16,838 species left.
11. From my view
There’re several possible solutions preventing deforestation.
The authorities should enact stricter laws preventing illegal loggers from cutting
down forests.
Also create new tropical forests and national reserves to protect wild animals.
Eventually, people should plant green trees around their accommodations.
To have a fresh and peaceful atmosphere and prevent global warming and
climate change.
