Probability for Math Students

1) The document discusses compound probability problems involving drawing marbles from a bag and cards from a deck. It provides examples of finding the probability of drawing one object, replacing it, and then drawing another. 2) It also gives examples of finding the probability of drawing one object, not replacing it, and then drawing a second object. 3) One problem compares the odds of the Eagles versus the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, stating the Eagles have better odds.

notebook September 12, 2012

You have a bag of marbles:  3 green, 5 red, and 2 white.

1.  Find the probability of picking a green or a red.  _______________

2.  Find the odds in favor of picking a white marble.

3.  Find the odds against picking a green marble.

4.  The odds of the Eagles winning the Super Bowl are 7 : 2 and the odds of
the Steelers winning the Super Bowl are 15 : 1.  Who has better odds of

Probability of Compound Events
Compound means more than one thing happening as part of the event.

P (A then B) = P (A)      P (B after A)

You roll a number cube and pick a card from a deck of cards.  What is the
probability of the following compound events occurring?

1)  P (rolling a 3, then picking a heart)

2)  P (rolling an odd number, then picking a spade)

3)  P (rolling a 2 or a 4, then picking the jack of clubs)

4)  P (rolling not a 5, then picking not a diamond)
