Prof. (Dr.) GURDEEP SINGH
Vice-Chancellor,
Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag
Prof. Gurdeep Singh is the founder member of the Centre of Mining Environment (CME) and Dept. of
Environmental Science & Engg. (ESE) at ISM, Dhanbad. He started the unique academic programs :
M.Tech in Environmental Science & Engineering (1990) and B.Tech in Environmental Engineering
(2006). He has about 31 years of Teaching, Research, HRD/Consultancy. He has completed 18 R&D
projects sponsored by MOEF, MHRD including 10 World Bank aided projects, etc. He has published
over 346 Research papers, edited 9 books and guided 31 PhDs students.
He is at the forefront of cutting edge research in mitigating environmental and social impacts of mining in
India. He has carried out various R&D and Consultancy projects particularly World Bank aided Projects
of MOEF/GOI and Coal India Limited on Environmental Management Capacity Building for Mining
Sector. Currently Regional Environmental Impact Assessment of Goa Mining Region, Building the
Social & Environmental Management Capacity of Afghanistan and Nigeria Mineral Sectors under World
Bank aided Project. He has organised over 100 Executive Development Programs on various Mining
Environmental aspects with training of over 1500 personnel of mining sector. He is also the coordinator
of MOEF Sponsored Environmental Information System on Mining (MIN-ENVIS) catering the
requirements of various stakeholders while maintaining & operating the website and publication of
various Newsletters and Monographs.
MoEF/GOI has appointed him as the first Chairman, Jharkhand State Environmental Impact
Assessment Authority- a statuary authority to provide Environmental Clearance at Jharkhand
State level.
Awards / Recognition
Conferred with the ISM Alumni Association (ISMAA) Award in Recognition of Supervising Maximum
Number of Ph.Ds awarded by the Institute during the period 2010-13 on May 10, 2014 in the presence of
the President of India as Chief Guest at 36th Convocation of ISM, Life Time Achievement Award by the
IM & EJ(2011), National Mineral Award (2001), Subarna and Sashibhushan Memorial Award (2003),
Bala Tandan Award of the Mining Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (2000) & MEAI (2013),
State Bank of India Best Researcher of the Year Award 2011-12 and Best Paper Awards: J.N.Panda
Memorial Award of Institution of Engineer(s) (1995), M.L.Rungta Award of MEAI (2007) and Young
Scientist Paper Award by American Academy of Science (2007) at Houston, Texas, Prof. S.K.Bose
Memorial Lecture, delivered at The 20th National Convention of Mining Engineers, hosted by The
Institution of Engineers (India) Neyveli Local Centre, January 30, 2009. He was also honoured with the
‘Award of Excellence’ of NEA at the National Conference on Harmony with Nature in the context of
Environmental Issues and Challenges of the 21th Century (Harmony-2014), organized at M.L. Sukharia
University, Udaipur, Rajasthan (November 28-30, 2014).
Prof. Singh was the Leader of the two Delegations deputed by Ministry of Environment & Forests
(MOEF), Govt. of India to the USA, Canada and Australia for International Training/ Expert Study tour
on Best Management Practices in Mining under EMCBTAP: Mining Sub-Component.
Prof. Singh has been serving as the member on the Editorial Boards of few Journals and associated with
various Professional Bodies such as MGMI, MEAI, IAEM, IGS, SGAT, IAAPC, IES, etc. He has
been serving as National Council Member of MEAI since 2005. He has been invited to deliver
Key-note/ Special Lectures at various Institutes (National Judicial Academy, National Forest
Academy, NEERI, IITs, NITs, BHU, CMPDI, IICM, BCCL, CMRI, RRL, NLC, etc). He has
been Visiting Professor to Southern Illinois University (1994-96, 2006). Prof. Singh has also
been serving on various Expert Committees of Govt. of India particularly EAC (Mining) of
MOEF (2006-2009) and member of the Restructuring of Indian Bureau of Mines, Ministry of
Mines.
