Florida Supreme Court Upholds Bundy Sentence

Theodore Bundy was convicted of murdering Kimberly Leach and was sentenced to death. He was also convicted and sentenced to death for murdering two women during an attack at the Chi Omega sorority house. Bundy appealed his convictions and death sentences. The Supreme Court of Florida denied Bundy's appeal, finding the death sentences were justified under the law. Eyewitness testimony and evidence linking Bundy to multiple murders provided sufficient evidence for his convictions.

BUNDY VS STATE OF FLORIDA

1.- Case: Theodore Robert BUNDY, Appellant, v. STATE of Florida, Appellee. 471 So. 2d 9
(1985) No. 59128. Supreme Court of Florida. May 9, 1985.

Facts: On February 9, 1978, Kimberly Leach, age 12, was reported missing from her junior
high school in Lake City, Florida. Two months later, the Leach girl's partially decomposed
body was located in a area near the Suwanee River.

During Sunday, January 15, 1978, an intruder entered the Chi Omega sorority house and
brutally attacked four women residing there. Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy were killed,
and Kathy Kleiner and Karen Chandler sustained serious injuries. An hour of the attacks,
an intruder entered another home nearby and attacked a woman residing there, Cheryl
Thomas.

Procedural history:

On July 21, 1978, Bundy was indicted for the murder and kidnapping of Kimberly Leach.
Bundy was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment and death for the kidnapping
conviction and death for the murder.

Bundy was indicted, convicted, and sentenced to death for the Chi Omega murders, in
1984

Appeal by Theodore Robert Bundy from his conviction of first-degree murder and the trial
judge's imposition of the death sentence. (1985).

Legal issue: Is the appeal of Ted Bundy admissible?

Ruling: No. The Supreme Court of Florida concluded that the sentence of death imposed
was justified and appropriate to the law.

Reasoning: The eyewitness identification testimony was clear and concise and not
substantially affected by the use of hypnosis as says Bundy. Besides there is also a crucial
link in the chain of evidence that involves Ted in the 2 homicides and makes him suspect
in 36 murders in the northwest United States.
