5 mins Introduction to Vision and Mission

Vision and Mission is the core of your events. It must be created such that anyone who
reads it will have an idea of what your event is for. Where you are going is your Vision
and how do you plan to get there is your Mission.

20 mins Steps in Making a Vision Statement

Step 1:Remember the definition of a Vision Statement
In other words, you vision statement pertains to what you want your event to
be in the future. It should be aspirational, meaning you consider it to be your
goal. At the same time, inspirational and motivational.

Knowing this, you can start of by writing simple goals you have set for yourself
and/or your event (e.g. positive net income, increased attendance, increased
number of participating schools). You can be vague if your vision is still
unclear.

Step 2:Remember who you are

It might sound cheesy but it helps to know in helping you make a vision
statement. When making a vision statement, you have to take note of the
following things:
● What is your event? How did it start?
● What are the event’s core values? The organization?
● What are the goals of the event? The organization?
LTS 2019: Called to Lead
Your vision statement is technically the future of your event. In making one,
you have to make sure that it is aligned with the vision of your other
stakeholders - the event itself, and the organization and its Board of Directors.

An easier way of doing this is by imagining an Elevator Pitch. It’s a way of

pitching where you have a short amount of time to sell your product or
business to a possible investor. Comparing it with an organization, if you have
to invite someone to be an org partner but have a short amount of time, what
would you say?

Step 3: Make a Vision Board

The vision board is just a simple collection of your thoughts from the previous
step. A vision board is literally a board where you put your thoughts in a way
to compile them.

Step 4: Distill to the Essentials

Using the information in your Vision board discard anything that is not related
to your core values. After this, you’ll have the skeleton of your Vision
Statement. You can use the following guide questions to help you filter the
information in your Vision Board.
● Is the idea rooted to the core value of the organization? The event?
● Does this benefit the organization is some way? How?
● How would these changes affect the event? The organization?

Step 5: Write
When you start writing you vision statement, you can use short words and
sentences. Don’t think too much about making your vision statement
“beautiful”. Focus more on the content. Make sure it contains the ideas you
put and filtered in your Vision Board. Also, limit yourself to concrete language.

Step 6 : Ask for Feedback

The best way to know if your Vision statement is working is to have other
people read it. If they read it and understood it without you having to go into
lengths trying to explain it, it’s already a good vision statement.

Step 7: Continually Review

Getting an effective vision statement is hard on your first try so don’t be
afraid to edit and change your statement.

10 mins Steps in Making a Mission Statement

Step 1: Remember what a mission statement is
A mission statement is what you do to achieve your vision statement.
Knowing this, go back to your vision board. With every vision, write the steps
and ways you can think of to reach the vision you wrote. With your vision
statement, ask yourself, “What must I do to make this happen?”

Step 2: Write your mission statement

With the steps you wrote in your vision board, try to come up with a unifying
idea. This can serve as the backbone of your mission statement.
LTS 2019: Called to Lead
Step 3: Continually Review
The same way with your vision statement, you have to continually review
your mission statement and get feedback from other people.

20 mins Initial Vision and Mission Statement Workshop

Have them finish their initial vision and mission statement.

15 mins Presentation of Vision and Mission Statement

Give each group 2 minutes to present their vision and mission statement and another
3 minutes to get feedback from other groups.
