Ironman Hamburg Athlete Guide 2019
Ironman Hamburg Athlete Guide 2019
Dear athletes,
Welcome to the third edition of IRONMAN Hamburg! After the special challenges in the past year we are looking
at this year‘s race with pride and full of confidence. Your preparations for months as well as ours are going to be
put to practice on Sunday, July 28th.
We are very delighted to offer you to cross the `Köhlbrandbrücke` twice on our new bike course as an absolute
highlight this year. On a varied and technically demanding stretch you cycle through Hamburg‘s port before the
second, flat but windy part of the loop at the dike of the Vier- and Marschlande begins. Both turning points at the
end of the transition as well as at the Zollenspieker Fährhaus are the hot spots for great race atmosphere that will
push you.
In addition to this fenomenal change, we are looking forward to welcome you on Friday at the Pasta Party and on
Monday at the Award banquet at the Cruise Terminal of the HafenCity. The deeply symbolic construction of
containers at the Cruise Terminal represents the maritime aura that is offered by Hamburg as the „Gate to the
World“.
Furthermore we stick to the spectacular swim course in the Binnen- and Außenalster as well as the very
impressive atmosphere along the run course by the Alster lake. The finish line in front of the historical town hall
completes the race course with all its highlights in a very impressive manner. We cannot wait to welcome all of
you healthy and happy at the finish line with the words, „You are an IRONMAN“.
All of this would not be possible without thousands of volunteers who are responsible for the safety of the
course, the aid stations for the athletes and a lot more different services around the whole event. We respect
your support and are very grateful because this gigantic event in Hamburg could not happen without you.
Moreover we send a great Thank You to our host city Active City Hamburg and last but not least to all of our
sponsors and supporters, to offer the best possible to our participants.
The IRONMAN Team is looking forward to Hamburg and to welcome you, to enjoy the unique, hanseatic
IRONMAN feeling all together.
Yours in sports,
Konrad Straube

The Welcome Banquet, offering a variety of pasta dishes, takes place on Friday, 26th July from 05:00pm until
09:00pm at the Cruise Center HafenCity. The entry fee for the IRONMAN Hamburg includes your entry to the
Welcome Banquet. Additional guest tickets can be purchased for 20,00€ on site at the entrance, cash only.
There is limited parking available at the location. We recommend to get to the venue either by bicycle (there
will be a safe bike rack area) or use public transport. Taking U-Bahn line U4 until Überseequartier you will
arrive right next to the Cruise Center.
Sunrise on 28th July will be at 05:29am, sunset will be around 09:24pm. Expected average daytime
temperature is between 20° and 25°C.
We will monitor the weather on the race day. We reserve the right to cancel, modify or shorten any portion of
the event for safety considerations.
• The Transition Area opens on Race Day at 05:00am and will be closing by 06:15am. Only athletes, staff and
authorized persons of the IRONMAN Hamburg are permitted to access the Transition Area. Coaches,
managers, family members and spectators stay outside this zone.
• The bike service is available on Sunday, 28th July from 05:00am in the Transition Area. Pumps will be
provided. You are allowed to bring your own as well, but they need to be removed from the Transition Area
prior to the swim start. Please, do not put your own pump into the white transition bag.
• The white transition bag containing the after-race-clothing has to be dropped by leaving the Transition to
the swim start before the race. Therefore the organizer provides two trucks on the way between Transition
Area and swim start at the Info point. The bags will await their owners in the Athletes Garden close to the
Finish Line.
As a part of the global IRONMAN Swim Start Initiative and the general development of the competition there
will be a so called „Rolling Swim Start“ at IRONMAN Hamburg.
The Athletes will line up according to their realistic predicted swim time, so that every 3-4 seconds four
athletes will be sent out to start. It will take approximately 30 minutes to get the entire field across the swim
start line.
PLEASE BE HONEST TO YOURSELF AND LINE UP ACCORDING TO YOUR REALISTIC EXPECTED SWIM TIME!
This way we can guarantee a smooth and secure flow, ensuring equal opportunities for all participants.
Bike
• The cycling is a time trial without any company. The course consists of two laps (91km each) and starts at
the northern end of the Transition Area, which is located at the Ballindamm. The bike course is completely
blocked for the traffic. But still there is oncoming traffic by other athletes or ambulances in case of an
emergency expected at any time.
• IRONMAN security staff, under police supervision, will operate pedestrian/car crossing at certain positions
along the bike course. The race will not be affected by the crossings.
• The athletes have to go to the penalty boxes on their own. The exact position of the penalty boxes are going
to be announced at the race briefing. They are visibly marked on the course.
• On the bike course there are four aid stations per lap. Please find the exact positions of the nutrition points
as well as the order of the nutrition in the graphic on page 18.
Run
• It is a four-lap run course. Access to the run course is only permitted for athletes due to safety reasons.
• For the visual lap control all participants get a colored wrist band in each lap which has to be worn visibly on
the arm. When the four colored wrist bands are complete, the athlete can turn towards the finish line.
Please pay attention to the signs at the finish line and the instructions of the volunteers.
• There is no penalty box on the run course. If you get a penalty card, you will be marked on your position
and have to stop for one minute.
• On the run course there are five aid stations and one Energy station. Please find the detailled order of the
aid stations in the graphic on page 20. The access to the fourth lap will be closed by 9:45pm.
If an athlete cannot compete on race day (e.g. due to illness), or stops the race early, it is necessary to inform a
referee, a race marshal or responsible person at the transition area. In case the athlete does not sign out, the
timing-chip is still active. This may arise in costs for search and rescues (u.c.c. for the athlete him-/herself), as
the organizer assumes an emergency situation and will initiate appropriate measures.
Doping tests
For all professional athletes, see the regulations of the IRONMAN Pro Membership. In the case an age group
athlete has to go to a doping test and is taking medicine due to current illness, a medical certificate has to be
shown prior to the race. A late filing is not possible (we recommend to store the document in the white
transition bag).
Medical Support
The Medical Team of the IRONMAN Hamburg guarantees an optimum level of medical support at any time.
During the race doctors and first aid personnel of the German Red Cross will attend the Swim Course, each Aid
Station along the Bike course and the Run Course. When crossing the Finish Line every athlete is taken care of
by the Finish Area Team. A doctor will check the physical condition.
The Medical Team asks all athletes (especially with warm weather conditions), to drink enough and regularlely
(water and especially isotonic drinks) during the race and after the finish. Every competitor must have an own
individual health isnurance which covers medial treatment in case of serious injury or illness as well as
treatment in a hospital.
The following cut off times apply for the different race portions, beginning at the start time and for the entire
race:
If you do not finish the different portions within these times you have to stop racing. The race is over at
11:00pm. Athletes crossing the Finish Line after 11:00pm will not be listed in the official results. Road closures,
Safety- and Security precautions will end at 11:00pm!
If you do have to stop the race at any point before the Finish Line you have to inform a race marshal. Please
confirm that you have stopped the race when entering the next transition area at the tent of Mika timing.
Otherwise the organizer supposes that you have a serious problem and will order a rescue team. This would
happen on your own costs. The organizer does not cover the costs for the operation.
Finisher shirts and medals will be handed out in the Athletes Garden to the successful athletes. Please bring
your bib numer. Certificates will also be available as a download after the event. We will also offer medal
engraving.
The Bike Check-Out is located at Ballindamm (Transition Area) and is open from 6pm till midnight on race day.
Bikes that are not picked up by midnight, will not be supervised from this point anymore.
Bikes are returned in exchange for the race-chip. Bikes will not be returned if the athlete is not able to show
the race-chip and/or a valid identity card/passport, if the chip got lost. Personal belongings that have been left
in the Transition Area can be picked up seperateley by showing the race-number and a valid pictured-
ID/passport, if the athlete is not going to pick up the equipment him-/herself. The Bike Check-Out can also be
handled by a different person than the athlete him-/herself as long as this person can show the race number
and a valid ID.
Once the athlete has left the Bike Check-Out, claims of damage or loss of material will not be accepted any
more.
