Signal Timing and Level of Service

The document discusses signal timing and level of service (LOS) at an intersection. It provides data on green, yellow, and red times collected in 5 minute intervals over an hour. It then calculates the average green time, cycle length, flow rate, saturation flow rate, and capacity. Using these values, it determines the delay is 40 seconds, corresponding to LOS A, where conditions are ideal.

SIGNAL TIMING AND LEVEL OF SERVICE

Introduction

Conflicting traffic movements is the most common problem in the world of transportations
which is undeniable to everybody. There were a lot of research about traffic problems, but as of
now, in some areas these research cannot be developed due to some factors that may affect to the
people. The experts were trying other method on how to control the traffic conflict, one of this
were signal timing.

Signal timing of an intersections allow the traffic problem to proceed safely and efficiently
through space that is common to those movements. This will be accomplished by separating each
movements rather than space time will be used.

This signal timing will be achieved through computing the Level of Service (LOS). These
is defined in terms of an average stopped delay per vehicle. This delay is directly related to the
driver’s level of frustration, discomfort, fuel consumption, and loss of travel time.

C. COMPUTATION OF LOS

Base on the data:

Cycle Length = 181 seconds
Effective Green Time = 95
Actual Flow Rate = 1107 pcu/hr
Saturation Flow Rate = 1800pcu/hr
And the average headway based on our observation was 2.0 seconds
Capacity = (g/C)(Saturation flow rate) = 945pcu/hr

In identifying the LOS we need to get the delay first by the given formula:
d = [0.38C(1-g/C)2]/[1-(g/C)(X)]+173X2[(X-1)+[(X-1)2+(16X/C)]1/2]
where:
C = cycle length
g/C = green ratio
g = effective green time
X = V/c ratio for the lane group
V = actual flow rate
c = capacity of the lane group
Solution
Before we can calculate the delay for the approach, we need to know the green
ratio, the capacity, and the ratio for the lane group. The green ratio for this approach is
95/181 or 0.525. The capacity is equals to 0.525(1800) or 945 pcu/hr. The ratio V/c is
1107/945 or 1.171.
By placing the values calculated above into the equation, we obtain an average
vehicle delay of positive 40 seconds. Therefore these corresponds to the level of service
grade “A”, which means the driving conditions are ideal in all other respects as well.
