6th Grade Plate Tectonics Animation

This lesson plan teaches 6th grade students about plate tectonics through creating animations using Scratch. Students will be split into teams to create an animation explaining how plate tectonics affects a specific location. They will demonstrate how earthquakes move and impact areas. The goal is to have students practice computational thinking by breaking a problem down into steps. Internet safety protocols will be followed to protect student privacy while researching online for their projects. The teacher will provide examples and instruction to help students reflect on their understanding through the creative coding process.

Coding and Computational Thinking

Lesson Idea Name: How Plate tectonics moves

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 6th grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S6E5F: Construct an explanation of how the movement of lithospheric plates, called plate tectonics, can cause
major geologic events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Leader 2b
Advocate for equitable access to educational technology, digital content and learning opportunities to
meet the diverse needs of all students.

Selected Technology Tool:

Computer, Website such as scratch.com
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement:
After understand the unit, students will create an animations about their understanding of plate tectonics.
Students will be broken up into teams, but not exceeding 4 people to a team. Each team will pick a location
on map and use animation to explain how plate tectonics effect that location. The team will use Scratch to
generate their animation
Representation:
Teams will create an animation on how an earthquake move and how it affect that area.
Action and Expression:
The only guidelines for creating the animation are for teams to use all the features listed above. The
animation for the project can be any form that the student(s) want it to be. The use of music, image and
the animation to the project.

Lesson idea implementation: I start the lesson by telling the students that the class will be learning about
plate tectonics over the next 2 weeks. After a couple of classes of teaching the topic, then I will introduce
the assignment, I will display my example animation of what it can be. As the animation showing, I will
explain to students they will spends time in class coding the animation. After the animation is done, I will
answer all questions that students have and pass out the instruction sheet and the rubric.
Coding and Computational Thinking
Importance of technology:
The use of this software is to give students complete control let them create their own animation. The
purpose of using this software is to give them the idea of what conceptual thinking is. By using the website,
students able to start having an idea of how to approach when encounter a difficult task.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Having students create their own animation, there will be a risk of the internet safety. This means students
identity and their personal information may be used by third party while searching for images or accessing
Scratch. The animation will only use website that are approved by the teacher, school which do not ask for
student’s personal information. The use of personal emails or information about the student will not be
allowed. I will give the students a copy of the internet safety rules and a list of different sources for them to
use in their project.

Reflective Practice:
In my opinion on this assignment, the main goal was not to have students to show their knowledge about
plate tectonic, but rather the idea of conceptual thinking and how students should approach when this
happen. And using Scratch, students will able to learn step by step coding and reflect their understand from
their creation.
