ORGANIZATION AND DECOMPOSITION
IN PRODUCT DESIGN

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

METHODICAL EVOLUTION IN PRODUCT DESIGN

It covers the 5 main stages of product design

and development:
1. Destination: Vision, Strategy, Roadmap
2. Discovery: Inspiration, Ideation, Testing
3. Definition & Design
4. Development
5. Data and Optimization

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

DISCOVERY
Discovery has three major steps.
 Inspiration: Learn as much as possible as fast as
possible.
 Ideation: Generate as many ideas as possible as fast
as possible.
 Testing: Iterate as much as possible as fast as
possible.

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

• Defining & Designing the right thing.
• Because it
 Provides us with a 360 view on the problem
 Helps us consider as many solution
alternatives as possible
 Enables us to remove biases through
collaboration and testing

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

Discovery cntd......
 Inspiration
 Imagine yourself being a newborn baby or an
alien landed on Earth for the first time.
Inspiration does two things.
• helps us understand the problem correctly by
listening to customers and our company.-
Whatssup
• feeds us with inspiration from competitors,
existing patterns and from North Stars-
Compass-Jeep, Duster-Renault, Hero-Honda

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

• When it comes to product we have a lot of places
to learn from.
Mainly from the following.
• Users
• Our Company
• Competitors
• Patterns - Familiar things are not only things we
can source from competitors but we can also use
patterns to find them-Gpay, Payatm, PhonePe
• North Stars- North Stars are the
products/companies/systems. we admire- FB,
Linkedin,whatsupp,etc

Concurrent Engineering
• Method of designing and developing products, in
which the different stages run simultaneously, rather
than consecutively.
• It decreases product development time and also the
time to market, leading to improved productivity and
reduced costs

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

Need of Concurrent Engineering
• In today's business world, corporations must be able to
 React to the changing market needs rapidly, effectively, and
responsively.
 To reduce their time to market and adapt to the changing
environments.
 Decisions must be made quickly and they must be done right
the first time out.
 Concurrent engineering is a process that must be reviewed
and adjusted for continuous improvements of engineering
and business operations.

Prof. JSA, Department of Mechanical Engg

HOW TO APPLY CONCURRENT ENGINEERING

• Commitment, Planning, and Leadership

• Continuous Improvement Process

• Communication and Collaboration
