Self-Assessment Letter

The student took an online college English course and was initially nervous about taking the course online and about their writing abilities. Through the course, the student learned they could succeed in an online setting and that they were a better writer than they realized. The most challenging assignments were the narrative essay due to having to share personal experiences, and the argumentative essay due to difficulty finding sources and using the online library. Through the writing and revision process, which included peer feedback, the student improved their writing skills. They were surprised by their ability to complete the challenging assignments and hope to apply what they learned to future college courses.

Self-Assessment Letter

As a student I learned that I do not have to be in a classroom setting to do well. Before I

started this class, I was so nervous because I have never taken a college course. I was worried

that being online I would not do as well, and I surprised myself. As a writer I learned that I am

better at writing papers than I thought. I would have never imagined getting A’s on writing

assignments in college. After writing most of the essays I was so nervous to see the grade.

The narrative essay was challenging because I so scared to write about my personal life. I

did not want to be that open, especially since we had to critique each other. I did like how I felt

stronger after writing this paper. The evaluation essay was challenging because I wanted people

to see The Kardashians from a different perspective. I liked how after my peers said they liked it,

and they wanted to watch the show now. The analysis essay was challenging because I did not

get to choose a topic, I had to select one that was already given. I liked how many of us had the

same TedTalk, but we chose to use a different perspective. The annotated bibliography was

challenging because I had never done one before. I liked how it made it easier to write the

argumentative essay. The argumentative essay was challenging because I could not find

information on my topic, I also did not like using the library. I liked the argumentative essay

because it pushed me harder than anything else.


Houser 2

When writing my paper, I would first do prewriting. Then I would get to look at sample

papers, this really helped me. After that I would write my rough draft. Next, I would do peer

feedback to others. Lastly, I would turn in my final copy. The most difficult essay to start was

the Argumentative essay. It was just overall such a challenging writing assignment. When

working to improve my essays I would just look at all my peer feedback I had received. Yes, my

writing process has changed since I started this course. I now break it up into sections instead of

just winging it all at once.

The course surprised me because in the beginning I thought I would never survive it, but

as time went on the more, I started getting familiar with the course. I thought the peer feedback

was going to be so hard, and I would not know what to say. I was surprised to find out I did not

mind doing it at all. The assignments surprised me because I could actually accomplish them. I

thought in the beginning that they would be too hard for me. I hope to take this knowledge to

future college courses. I have learned so much about writing papers that I hope I can use these

techniques next semester. I also hope to take it to my future in psychology. I would be able to

write papers in order to get my point across.

I like how all the papers were split up into two weeks. I did not like writing the

argumentative essay and using the online library. The sample essays were really helpful to me. I

was able to find so much information. I found it really frustrating when I did not get much peer

feedback, and I did not know how to correct my essay. The amount of work was reasonable, but

sometimes it got overwhelming.
