SPEClFICATION FOR
STEEL TUBES FOR AUTOMOTIVE PURPOSES
( First Reuision )
0. FOREWORD
0.1This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 24 August 1979, after the draft finalized by the
Steel Tubes, Pipes and Fittings Sectional Committee had been approved by
the Structural and Metals Division Council.
0.2 This standard was first published in 1965. As a result of the experience
gained since its publication it has been decided to revise this standard
incorporating a few changes. Provision relating to surface protection of
pipes during transit, permissible fin height and marking have been added.
A reference has been made to IS : 5429-1979* and Amendment No. 1 has
also been incorporated in this revision.
0.3 In the formulation of this standard due weightage has been given to
international co-ordination among the standards prevailing in different
countries in addition to relating it to the practices in the field in this
country. This has been met by deriving assistance from the following
publications:
B. S. 980: 1950 Steel tubes for automobile purposes. British Standards
Institution.
DIN 2391 : 1967 Sheet 1 -Seamless steel precision tubes cold-drawn or
cold-rolled special grade accuracy sizes. Deutscher Normenausschuss.
DIN 2391 : 19i7 Sheet 2 - Seamless steel precision tubes cold drawn or
cold rolled special grade accuracy- technical conditions of delivery.

DIN 2393: 1957 Welded precision steel tubes cold drawn to close
tolerances. Deutscher Normenausschuss.

0.4 The composition given for different types of steel tubes in this standard
has been brought in line with IS: 1570-1961*.
0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express-
ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS: 2-19607. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off
value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard covers the requirements for steel tubes for use in auto-
motives including scooters and motorcycles, in sizes up to and including
114’3 mm outside diameter and of the following types:
Type of Tube Tube Designation Reference
Cold drawn seamless steel tubes CDS Section 2
Electric resistance butt-welded steel ERW Section 3
tubes
Cold drawn electric resistance butt- CEW Section 4
welded steel tubes
1.2 Details of the grades of tube and materials dealt with under each type
are given in subsequent clauses.
1.3 All steel tubes covered by this standard shall comply with the require-
ments laid down in Section 1, and in addition, with the requirements under
each appropriate Section.
2. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL
2.1 General requirements relating to the supply of materials shall be as laid
down in IS : 1387-1967:.
3. MATERIAL
3.1 The steel for tubes shall be manufactured by open-hearth, electric,
duplex, or one of the basic oxygen processes or a combination of these
processes. In case, any other process is employed in the manufacture, prior
approval of the purchaser shall be obtained.
*Schedules for wrought steels for general engineering purposes.

SGeneral requirements for the supply of metallurgical materials ( first revision ).
IS : 3074- 1979
4. WORKMANSHIP
4.1 Tubes shall be free from loose rust, scale and other harmful defects,
unless specified otherwise, ends of tubes shall be cut square.
4.2 The height of the internal fin shall be not greater than 60 percent of the
specified wall thickness.
5. STRAIGHTNESS
5.1 Unless agreed to otherwise between the purchaser and the manufac-
turer, tubes shall not deviate from straightness by more than 1/600th of any
length, measured at the centre of that length.
6. MECHANICAL TESTS
6.0 Mechanical tests, where specified, shall be carried out as follows.
6.1 Tensile Tests -Tensile test shall be made on lengths cut from the ends
of selected tubes ( the ends being plugged for grips where necessary ) or on
longitudinal strips, not including the weld, cut from tubes. The tensile
strength, yield stress and the percentage elongation shall be determined in
accordance with IS : 1894-1972” and shall be not less than that specified.
6.2 Flattening Test - Flattening test shall be made on lengths cut from
the ends of selected tubes in accordance with IS: 232%1963t. The tubes
shall be capable, without showing crack or flaw, of being flattened until the
interior surfaces, at the middle, are brought to such a position that the
distance apart is not more than that specified. In the cast of ‘welded tubes
the weld shall be placed at the point of maximum curvature. The burrs
may be removed before testing.
6.3 Crushing Test -The test piece shall be capable of being crushed
endwise, without cracking, until its length is reduced by at least the
specified percentage of the original length. The length of the test piece shall
be about one-and-a-half times the outside diameter of the tube and the
ends shall be cut square to the axis of the tube.
6.4 Drifting Test-This test shall be carried out in accordance with
IS : 2335-1963:. Pieces of suitable length cut from the tubes shall be

tMethod for flattening test on steel tubes.
:Method for drift expanding test on steel tubes.
