TITLE
   Determine the Efficiency of the Screw Jack
OBJECTIVES
          To understand the mechanics of a screw thread
          To understand the efficiency and mechanical advantage of a screw jack
          To determine the coefficient of friction between the screw and the nut of the
           jack
INTRODUCTION
Screw Jack is used in applications where linear angular motion is required. This can
commonly use to lift moderately heavy weight such as vehicles. And pushing or pulling of
mechanical equipment, adjusting of tight clearance of mechanical parts cane be done by
screw jack. More commonly it is used as an adjustable support for heavy loads, such as the
foundation of houses or large vehicles.
A screw jack is a portable device consisting of a screw mechanism used to raise or lower
the load. There are two types of jacks;
   1. Mechanical
   2. Hydraulic
These jacks can be either hand operated or power driven. The hydraulic jack consist of
cylinder and piston mechanism. Although a jack is a simple device used to raise various
types of loads in proper size, strength and stability are essential requirements for the design
of the screw jack from safety consideration. Screw jack is a device used for lifting heavy
loads which are usually centrally loaded by applying smaller effort.
THEORY
Screw jack is a device used for lifting loads which are usually centrally loaded by applying
smaller effort. It works on the principle of inclined plane. The device consists of a nut and
screw. The load is carried by screw head. The body consisting of a nut is fixed and screw is
rotated by means of a lever. The axial distance moved by the screw when it makes one
complete revolution is known as the lead of the screw. The distance between two
consecutive threads is called pitch of the screw. For single threaded screw Lead=Pitch, and
for double threaded screw L=2p.
MATERIALS AND APPARATUS
PROCEDURE
Steps for taking the readings to raise the load;
   1. Firstly the cord is wrapped around the load drum and pass it over the pulley on the
      stabilized screw jack machine.
   2. The load cord and the clamp screw is adjust in a tangent line.
   3. Some weights are put on the load drum and some effort is added to the hanger on
      the pulley.
   4. The machine is hit with some material, thus some kind of movement can be seen in
      the loaded drum.
   5. The initial reading of the weight is written.
   6. After taking the first reading more weight is added until the pulley goes down.
   7. This procedure is repeated for some particular weights
Steps for taking the readings to lower the load;
   1. Firstly the cord is wrapped around the load drum and pass it over the pulley on the
      stabilized screw jack machine.
   2. The load cord and the clamp screw is adjust in the same horizontal level
   7. This procedure is repeated for some particular weights.
RESULTS
Effort to raise the load: Effort Vs Load
Effort to lower the Load: Effort Vs Load
