II) To Examine the Implementation of Sustainability and Ethical Policies of both INFOSYS &

WIPRO TECHOLOGIES in recent times.

INFOSYS TECHNOLOGY:
According to Nandan M. Nelekani, co-chairman of Infosys “A sustainable corporation that
nurtures its employees, which cares for its community and strives to minimize its
environmental impact, will be the one which retains the trust of society and be successful in
long-term.”
In a Sustainability report released by Infosys in 2009-2010, reveals their sustainability policies,
programs and performance to their key stakeholder’s and how they communicate among each
other. These measures have been implemented keeping in mind their duties towards
stakeholder, economy, society and impact on our environment.

Driving Sustainability at Infosys:


Some of the Responsibility includes
1) Sustainable strategies Used:
Infosys have worked with a number of external assemblies such as:
 World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) on Vision 2050.
 Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) on gender diversity.
 National Association of Software Companies (NASSCOM) India, on green
infrastructure and diversity practices.
 Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), India for benchmarking energy intensity for
commercial buildings.

2) Monitoring the progress of sustainable activities is done through the creation and
implementation of internal Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and environment
dashboards.

3) Activities under Stakeholders Engagement includes:


 Green initiative team along with stakeholder devised the treatment for carbon
footprint, energy and resource consumption.
 Green initiative team established Eco clubs at all departments to understand
employee and community expectation.
 Infosys HR team has enlisted the CSR guidelines for employee voluntary groups,
these guidelines will help the employee to monitor and report CSR activities in
systematic manner.
4) Infosys Promotes the sustainability within the team through:
 Awareness through Periodic campaigns.
 Published information on green initiative on the health safety environment on
our intranet.
 They have published their point of view on sustainability on the”Beyond
Business” section in their website: www.infosys.com/sustainability/.

5) Water Management: Rainwater is harvested across all Infosys campuses and all sewage
treatment water is used for irrigation rather than using fresh water for irrigation.

6) Bicycle sharing: In Infosys, every employee are allowed to use bicycle only. No personal
vehicles are allowed inside the campus. VIP’s are transported using electric golf chart in
a way to make pollution free campus.

Driving Ethical Policies at Infosys:


1) Company has maintained General Code of Conduct which expects all employees, agents
and contractors to maintain co-operative, positive, productive work environment and
business organization to ensure safety and welfare.

2) With regards to treatment of suppliers, following policies are implemented:


 To maintain workplace free of harassment.
 Ban on Alcohol and drugs within the workplace.
 Safety in workplace.
 Dress code and personal standards.
 All business expenses can be reclaimed by the employee.

3) Conflicts of interest:
In Infosys, All employees should avoid situations involving personal or actual conflict of
interest. An employee involved in such type of situation mentioned in the policy should
immediately report to his/her supervisor for the determination of whether such conflict
of interest exists. These situations may include employment within/outside, business
interest, With Related parties, protecting company’s confidential information.
WIPRO TECHNOLOGY:
In sustainability policy released by Wipro in 2009 -2010, reveals the principal goals towards the
sustainability policy as:

 To provide integrated portfolio of services and products that will help the customer
manage and reduces their carbon footprint. This portfolio will includes renewable
energy, light and Green IT.
 To continue designing and releasing new PC models with low energy consumption.
Wipro’s InfoTech PC models (including audio devices) to become 100% RoHS**
complaint by this year end.

Some of the sustainable policies implemented by Wipro include:

1) Energy Usage:
 Wipro’s goal of becoming carbon neutral itself illustrates rate of reduction of
carbon footprint.
Ex: Cumulated reduction of 18% of power consumption by employees from 2002
to 2009.
 Wipro’s aim is to collaborate and partner with multiple stakeholders in a way to
reduce the climate change. Their partners are their own customers, employees,
suppliers as well as government, NGO’s and regulators.
2) Waste Management:
 Efficient recycling of waste either internally or outside.
 By December 2013, to ensure not more than 10% of total waste reaches landfills.
 IT product wastes are hazardous, so special measures are taken in safe disposal.
3) People Development:
 To be among the most preferred place to work.
 To provide opportunities for learning and skill’s development of each and every
employee.
Ex: Wipro has invested around 114 hours of training per individual in 2010.
 To build the leadership talent across all levels.
 For excellence in learning and performance of employee, Wipro has won ASTD
Award four times in a row till 2010.
4) Safety and Health:
 Enhanced safety measures to all employees (24*7 operations), with special focus
on women.
 Pick up and drop CAB service to all employees.
 Provides gyms and yoga centers to release mental strain.

Driving Ethical Policies at Wipro:


1) Wipro’s General code of conduct, treatment of suppliers (or employees) and conflict of
interest policy is almost similar to the Infosys ethical issues which has already been
discussed in Infosys.
2) Wipro plays a major role in local community development:
Wipro has taken part in immediate needs of proximate communities like
 Providing education opportunities in different parts of India by
constructing schools in rural areas.
 Responding to ecological issues such as Tree plantation, lake restoration,
plastic less campaign’s etc.
 Disaster rehabilitation incidence which has happened in Gujarat’s
earthquake, cyclone in Kerala, Floods in Karnataka (2010).
 Encourage employee’s participation and voluntarism in social issues.
 Funds rising through volunteer contribution from employees.
 Establishment of Azeem Premji’s Foundation under which university,
schools and funds raising society has been established towards the
goodwill of the society.
