ESP Design and Selection
First: Consider the following
ㄱ The pump should be chosen to suit the desired rate
of production.
ㄴ The discharge pressure should be enough to lift the
well fluid and sustain the required wellhead press.
ㄷ Correct motor size should be chosen to suit the
flow and the head.
ㄹ Casing size becomes an important.
ㅁ The inflow capability of the well.
ㅂ GOR & Bubble point pressure.
ㅅ The bottom hole temperature.

Secondly: ESP Sizing Procedures
1. Collect and analyze the well’s productivity and fluid
data.
ㄱ Casing size
ㄴ Tubing size
ㄷ Plug back total depth
ㄹ Perforation depth
ㅁ Static fluid level
ㅂ Representative well teat (WC%)
ㅅ Fluid properties (oil & water SG.)
ㅇ Productivity index
ㅈ Bottom hole temperature
ㅊ Primary power
ㅋ Surface floe line length and elevation

2. Determine the well’s production capacity or determine
pump setting depth @ desired rate:
Flow rate Q
PI.
Drawdown (Ps Pwf )
2.31 Pressure
Head
Sp. Gr.
3. Calculate the Total Dynamic Head “TDH”:
TDH = Lift head + Well head pressure
+ Friction loss
Where:
Lift head = Dynamic fluid level
= Static level + Drawdown, and
WHP = Pipe friction loss + Elevation
Friction losses obtained from Figure 6.1 & 6.1a.

4. Select the pump type from the “pump performance
curve”, depending on Capacity, ID of Casing
ㄱ Appendix “A” and “B”
5. Number of stages required:
Total Dynamic Head
No. of stages
Head per Satge
6. Determine the motor horsepower using SG of lifted
fluids
HP
MotorHP No. ofstage SG
Stage
Where:
HP/Stage is obtained from the Pump Performance Curve.

7. Select the most economical cable size
[Table 2]
8. Determine the voltage loss in the cable & required
surface voltage:
Figure 6.2 shows the cable voltage loss
Surface voltage = motor voltage + voltage loss
9. Calculate the KVA requirements in order to size the
transformer.
Ass.Prof. Adel Afifi

ESP
Surface KVA = [Volts * Amps* 1.732]/1000
10. Select properly size accessories such as:
Check valve and Bleeder valve.
Well head, size and type.
