Kongsberg DPU Troubleshooting, New

The document provides instructions for handling communication errors with Distributed Processing Units (DPUs). It describes the following steps: 1. Check the LED indicators on the front panel of the DPU in question for issues with power, fuses, status, or built-in self-tests. 2. Refer to tables that map out the different LED indicator patterns and the appropriate corrective actions. 3. Also described are checks for cable connections and terminations, as well as electrical checks of power and interconnection cables.

How to handle DPU communication errors

WORLD CLASS – through people, technology and dedication

How to handle DPU communication errors
 If the Operator Station gives a communication error for one of the Distributed
Processing Units, the LEDs on the front panel of the DPU in question must be checked.

How to handle DPU communication errors

Power indicator

1. Locate the DPU for which the communication error is given.

2. Check the power LED indicator and, if applicable, perform corrective actions
according to the table below.

Fuse failure indicators

 Analogue and digital inputs are protected by internal circuit breakers.

 Short-circuiting due to faulty sensors and/or damaged wires are indicated by the DPU.

 Note that these indicators are only available for the DPUs listed in this section.

How to handle DPU communication errors

 Indication of fuse failure can either be for multiple channels simultaneously (typically
displayed by a LED mounted in the vicinity of the power LED) or for separate channels
(displayed by the LED also giving channel status).

 See the tables below for details.

How to handle DPU error codes

 All Distributed Processing Units have a Built-In Self-Test (BIST) functionality.

 These tests report errors to the Operator Stations on the system channel.

 The following table gives an overview of the error codes and gives appropriate actions to
be taken:

Regarding DPUs with physical channels

 Disconnect all connection terminals of the inputs, on the relevant DPU.

 Check the wires of all inputs separately, with reference the hull (by using the Mega
Ohm scale of the multimeter), in order to ensure the proper insulation of sensors &
cables.

 Do the same by using the VDC and VAC scale, in order to ensure that all signals are
voltage free (measure also for possible voltage between the cables of each channel).

 Normally, the resistance should be infinity, and the level of the voltage, approximately
at 0 Volt DC & AC.

Termination of shields in DPU cabinets/consoles

Cables with double shield

 Terminate common shield to PE bar.

 Terminate inner shields to DPU.
 Multicore cables with only common shield.
 Terminate shield to PE bar.

Single cables

 Terminate shield to DPU.

 Pigtails from each cable screen shall not be longer than 50mm.
 Shield of CAN cables shall always be terminated to unit enclosure in both ends.
 Always use two cable ties to terminate shield at DPU.

Electrical Checks

 Refer to the cable plans and interconnection diagrams, and visually check all power
and interconnection cables.

 Ensure that all cable connections are tight and secure.

 Ensure all protective covers are fastened correctly.

 Check that the screens of the cables, are connected to ship’s hull.

 Check all cable cores for correct connection and continuity.

 Any locally fitted plugs and connectors must be checked for shorts or open circuits.
