Chicago Citation Style Notes and Bibliography System (17th A)

This guide provides examples of the Chicago Citation Style Notes and Bibliography System (17th A).

This referencing style requires footnotes in text when citing, and a bibliography at the end of your document listing all the works that you have cited and any other works
you have consulted, the bibliography should be arranged alphabetically by author.

For additional examples and explanations, or in doubt, please refer to Chapter 14 of The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition.

Citing a secondary source is generally discouraged, since authors are expected to have examined the works they cite. If an original source is unavailable both the original and
the secondary source must be listed in the footnote, but only the original should appear in the bibliography.

Using Ibid.

In previous editions of the manual (16th edition and earlier) the abbreviation ibid. (abbreviated from the Latin "ibidem" which means "in the same place") was used to cite
the same source and page number(s) from a single source two or more times consecutively. If you use the same source but a different page number, the corresponding note
uses ibid followed by a comma and the new page number(s).

The 17th edition discourages the use of Ibid in favour of shortened citations.
