1. Warnings and legal information
This is a guide to various applications for multi-line 2 units. The application descriptions are to be
used as guidance only, the drawings, among other things, are not complete but only describing the
principles. Installing and operating gen-sets implies the generation of dangerous voltages and
currents. Therefore only qualified personnel should do this. DEIF A/S takes no responsibility for
operating or installing gen-sets or any other equipment. If there is any doubt how to install or
operate the gen-set, the company responsible for the installation or the operation must be
contacted.

2. Abbreviations and names
The following abbreviations and names are used for DEIF units:
- Multi-line 2: A family of multifunctional components. These have relay control outputs as
standard (for both speed governor and AVR), and analogue (+/-20mA) as well as Pulse Width
Modulated (PWM) outputs as option
o GPC: Generator paralleling controller

3. Description
These application notes describe the basic control system for a system controlling 2 (or more)
diesel generators and one mains breaker.
The system will semi-automatically:
- start and stop engines
- synchronise generators/mains
- transfer load to/from mains
- carry out parallel with mains peak lopping/power factor control
To do this, the system contains a number of selector switches:
- Running mode selector switch: The selector for diesel generator running or mains. Note that the
diagrams in these application notes show a “simple” version, i.e. the system will react
immediately when switching from diesel generators to mains and vice versa. If a safety time
delay is required, a separate timer relay must be used for this
- Generator AUTO/MAN switch: For each diesel generator this switch is used to decide if the
generator is to participate in the system functions or not
- Generator display mode selector: Placed on the display of each generator, this selector is used
to decide if the generator is controlled automatically (Remote) or by the display start/stop/
generator breaker control buttons (Local)
- Generator START ENABLE switch: If this switch is not ON, the generator will not start (start
blocking function)
Needed options
For the GPC carrying out mains breaker control:
- Option A1 or A2 or A3 to carry out mains failure protection
- Option D1 to carry out mains power factor and voltage synchronisation control
- Option E1 to make analogue command set points for speed, power, voltage and power factor to
the generator GPC units
For the generator GPCs:
- Option D1 to carry out power factor and voltage synchronisation control
- Option M1 or M2 to carry out engine start/stop and protection
All other options can be implemented as required.

The “Remote” LED is indicating if the generator is controlled locally via display unit pushbuttons
(LED OFF) or remotely (LED ON).
The selection is made with the MODE button.

AUTO
Set switch AUTO/MAN in position AUTO.
Set display MODE in Remote (LED ON).
This will enable the automatic generator running, meaning the generators will run constantly when
the selector is in the “DIESEL” position.
SEMI-AUTO
Set switch AUTO/MAN in position AUTO.
Set display MODE in Local (LED OFF).
The generators can now be started and stopped and the breaker closed (synchronised) and
opened (ramp down first) using the display buttons.
MANUAL
Select local mode on the display (Remote LED OFF) and AUTO/MAN in MAN (manual).
This will enable the operator to use the START, STOP and generator breaker buttons on the
display for start/stop and generator breaker synchronising/open.
In this running mode, to adjust the speed (frequency) up and down, binary command inputs must
be used.
Input terminal 44: Raise speed.
Input terminal 45: Lower speed.
If the breaker is open, pressing the breaker button will make the GPC act as a check synchroniser,
but the speed must be controlled with the binary inputs (or by other means).
If the breaker is closed and the breaker button is pressed, the breaker will open
immediately in this running mode.
REMEMBER: Set the mode on the display back to remote (LED ON) and AUTO/MAN back in
AUTO again when finished with manual. If not, the result is that the generator will not participate in
the automatic functions.

Plant control wiring
Abbreviations used:
DG: Diesel generator
MAINS: Mains connection
GB: Generator breaker
MB: Mains breaker
These wirings only comprise the DC lines. The AC lines are described in the GPC
Designer’s Reference Handbook.
DC controls
The wiring shows the necessary control circuits to carry out the task. It is assumed that all controls
(except breaker commands) are carried out using 24V DC.
Running mode selector switch
The selector switch is the operator’s selector for diesel generator running or mains connection.
Note that for the switching to take effect, the GPCs must be in “remote” mode (selected on the
display).
