Female foeticide still remains a curse on the twenty first century. Though people are educated
and well prepare but still they forget the importance of female child. The census clearly shows
the inequality and the wrong being committed to the females. People still consider girls as a
burden. Moreover it is a shame on us that we still discuss a word like 'female foeticide". It is an
extreme manifestation of crime against the half population. Pre-natal sex determination is done
and hence the foetus is aborted if a girl child is found.
In our city Vijayapura the male, female ratio has declined to 956 females per 1000 males. The
reason behind this mainly is that the social standing of women at some parts is low compared to
men. They have ranked low since ages and parents still consider having a girl child a burden.
They consider educating the girls as unrewarded expense as one day they have to be married and
that spending can never be compensated. In some areas they are not even given the necessary
education and proper food to eat. The time they are supposed to enjoy childhood they are forced
to do the daily household chores.
Birth of a boy is considered as vital in patriarchal society. When a male child is born various
lavish prayers and offerings are given in the temples. Big celebrations are made. In old days the
people also expecting the male baby but if they get female baby they were told God has given
what we can do. But now a day’s parents are selecting their male baby. Only it is because of the
technology.
In Pink city Jaipur and Blue City Jodhpur There have been reports that certain clinics in small
cities display openly billboards with incentives: “Do you want to spend 500 or 50 lakhs”
referring to the cost of abortion against the cost of raising a girl child and marrying her off with a
dowry. The gender disclosure law which was an offence is creatively bypassed, by using code
words like: For girl vs. boy as it is:
Government has taken several actions in this regard but they have not been implemented strictly.
Strict actions and laws must be implemented to eradicate this injustice caused towards women.
Pre-natal sex determination practices must be considered as an act of violation of human rights
and also as the violence against women. Most women undergo a trauma during the pregnancy
phase as only a male child is expected from them. In some nations, demographers have said that
in the coming future there will be an acute gap between the male – female ratio.
Serials like “Daughters are precious” in satyamew jayata creates awareness among the people
and shown that in Rajasthan du to female foeticide young male are facing problems in their
marriage. No girls are found for marriage. These types of programs should be made regularly.
government programs like beti bachao beti padoa should be made more famous in the society.
