RFC 1700 Assigned Numbers October 1994

This document assigns protocol numbers to various internet protocols in the 8-bit Protocol field of the Internet Protocol (IP). Some key protocols assigned numbers are: ICMP (1), TCP (6), UDP (17). The numbers are used to identify the next level protocol in IP packets. A total of 255 possible protocol numbers are defined for IP, with some numbers unassigned or reserved.
