Objectives:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3.A
Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a
number line
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their
size.
Assessment:
Worldview Integration: Learning fractions might be a tedious math task, but I will strive to make it
relevant and exciting as I value each students learning experience around this practical skill.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Students working around the room playing Fraction Top-It.
DOMAIN 3: INSTRUCTION
CONTENT MANAGEMENT: THE LESSON
Motivation/Opening/Intro:
Review: compare two unequal fractions under document camera.
How are they similar? Are the pieces the same size? ½ is bigger than ¼
Why is ½ bigger than one fourth?
Use fractions cards to compare ½ and ¼. Using our fraction cards, we can see which is bigger and
smaller.
We are going to play a game that helps us practice comparing fractions and finding which is greater
and which is smaller. First we will cut out our cards. This might take a long time but when you are
finished, find someone else who is finished and you can play with them.
Here is how the game works: (directions shown on doc cam) Fraction Top It
1. You both flip your cards over at the same time.
2. Decide whose fraction is greater
3. Record the round
4. Winner keeps the two cards.
*You must record at least 5 rounds, after than just keep playing. *
(10-15 min)
If time remains, have students work on Comparing Fractions worksheet as an assessment tool.
Closure:
Share thoughts about comparing fractions. Is it always easy to know right away which one is bigger?
Is it helpful to use the fraction flash cards?
Why might it be important
