Critical Parameters of Normal Gait

This document discusses normal gait parameters and analysis. It provides average speeds, cadences, step lengths and stance/swing percentages in normal walking. It describes the phases of the gait cycle and subdivisions. Methods of analyzing gait through kinematics and kinetics are introduced. Joint positions, movements, forces and muscle activity throughout the gait cycle are examined. Determinants of gait including pelvic rotation, tilt, knee flexion and foot/ankle motion are covered. The effects of various factors on gait are also summarized.

Critical Gait Parameters

„ Average walking speed = 2-3 mph (60-

80m/min)
„ Average cadence = 80-110 steps/min
„ Average step length = 60 cm
„ Stance/swing = 60/40
„ Single/double limb support = 80/20
„ Running has no double limb support

Methods of Analyzing Gait
„ Kinematics is the method of
observing or measuring the position
of joints and segments through each
phase of gait (visual gait analysis)
„ Kinetics is the method of measuring
the Ground Reaction Force at each
joint and then calculating the muscle
activity or soft tissue resistance
present to stabilize the joint
