The Rajang River (Malay: Sungai Rajang or Batang Rajang) is a river

in Sarawak, Malaysia. The river is located in northwest of Borneo and it originates in
the Iran Mountains. The river flows approximately 563 km into Kapit, and then to
the South China Sea, making it the longest river in Malaysia.

Some of the important tributaries are:

 Balui River

 Katibas River

 Ngemah River

 Iran River

 Pila River

 Balleh River

 Bangkit River

 Kanowit River.
B) Describe any feature of erosion and a feature of deposition found on this river and
how they were formed.

On 6 October 2010, heavy rain in Putai and Nungun in upper Baleh is

reported to have caused a massive landslide that brought logs and debris down into
the Baleh river, tributaries above Kapit, and then into the Rajang river. It was
estimated that the volume of the logs and debris had exceeded 300, 000 m3. This
logjam had also affected the Igan River. The log debris, stretching 50 km long, had
reached Sibu on 8 October. The logjam had caused transportation difficulties for the
people living alongside the river and dead fish were also seen on the river.
C) Describe the uses of this river, its dangers, problems caused by it and solutions
taken by people/the government to solve these problems.

USES OF RIVER:

HABITATS

TOURISM
TRANSPOTATION USES
TRADE

TRANSPOTATION:

The town of Sibu can be assessed by oceangoing vessels for 80 miles

(130 km) while an additional 100 miles (160 km) of the river can be assessed by
shallow-draft craft. The remaining parts of the river which leads into the Sarawak
interior can only be assessed by small canoes. Speedboats and longboats are the
major form of transport between Kapit and Belaga. Transportation above Belaga to
Balui River requires longboats. Rajang River also serves to transport logs down the
river.
TRADE

Rajang Port Authority (RPA) is the main regulatory body to coordinate the
trade activities of all the 5 river ports along the Rajang River. RPA serves to provide
maintenance, adequate and efficient port services for all users of the ports. It is
located at the Sibu port operation centre

The 5 river ports along the Rajang River are:

 Tanjung Manis- mainly for handling logs and timber products

 Sarikei- mainly for handling agricultural products and consumer goods around
Sarikei area
 Bintangor- mainly agricultural product
 Sibu- mainly for handling timber and agricultural products
 Sungai Merah- mainly for handling fuel oil products

TOURSISM

There are two main tourism attraction at Rajang River that are cruise and long
house visit. Pandaw River Cruise was started on 1 July 2009 in order to boost
tourism activities along the Rajang River. It was a nine-day cruising starting from
Express Wharf Terminal of Sibuto Pelagus Rapids Resort in the rural interior
of Sarawak. The tourists can go hiking and visiting long houses and towns during the
ride. During 2017 Visit Sibu Year, longhouse visits along the Rajang River was
promoted as an ecotourism product.

HABITATS

As on 2 November 2012, Global Witness in a report entitled "In the Future

There Will Be No Forests Left", revealed that the logging operation of Interglobal
Empire, a subsidiary of WTK group of companies, in the logging concession T/3476
was responsible for the landslide into Melatai River which subsequently blocked the
Rajang River. By launching this campaign, they can prevent the habitat of animal
being disturbing. At the same time, it also help to prevent the endanger animal from
extinct.
DANGEROUS AND PROBLEM CAUSE BY IT AND SOLUTION FOR IT

Crocadile

Flood PROBLEMS Landslide

Water
pollution

There are crocodile found at Rajang River. It cause the people who travel by
using Rajang River having problem due to their life especially people who use craft/
sampan. The government cooperate with PERHILITAN to catch the crocodile that
found at Rajang River. The government also start to build small bridge across the
river.

Other than that, most of the longhouse near Rajang River always having
problem with collapsing and landslide. For example, early of the year A long house
with about 100 residents in interior Kapit division in central Sarawak is in danger of
collapsing into the Rajang River following massive hill slope erosion there. It cause
the people lose their house and their belongs. Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department
visited the long houses which involved. Other than that, they also give place to the
people to stay temporary till the government give money and build their houses.

More over especially doing raining season Rajang River always having
problem regarding float. It cause many houses destroyed and also kill the people
and animals. So the government cooperate with rescue help the people to transfer
from their house to safe side. they also provide food and accommodation during
heavy raining time. After that they will do gotong royong to clean their house and
government support by giving some financial to reduce their burden.
Next dangerous incident is Logjam. It’s an serious issues where the
irresponsible person cut down the trees and throw away into the river. Many ministry
blame each other and never come to the conclusion. For example: Sarawak
environment and public health minister, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh claimed that the
logjam disaster had never happened before in such a large scale. However, land
development minister, Datuk Seri James Masing claimed that similar incidents did
happen before and he blamed the disaster on indiscriminate logging by irresponsible
logging companies. Meanwhile, Sarawak state forest director, Len Talif blamed the
logjam solely on the increased concentration of rain during that period. The state's
chief minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud had advised the people of Sarawak not to accuse
anyone for the causes of this logjam and he assured that the state government will
probe into this matter.

Finally the water pollution in Rajang River getting worse day by day. it cause
many aquatic animal die. Other than that, people who staying around the river cause
many sick and they having problem to stay comfortable because of the smell.
Therefore the government strict the rules and punish the people who try to pollute
the river. At the same time, the NGO also doing cleaning process like Rotary Club to
avoid the river getting worse.
D) Describe any myths /legends connected to it.

According to Iban legend, Nabau is a giant snake comparable to the size of a

drum and is more than 100 feet in length. The recent sighting of Nabau cruising
along the Baleh River in Kapit has some resemblance to the ‘Loch Ness’ monster
known as Nessie in Scotland. A member of the disaster relief committee, Sibu on 31
January 2009 was monitoring the flood situation in Ulu Rajang in a helicopter when
he saw a monster that looked like a big snake cruising along the river. He took
photographs of the monster at 5.30 pm at one of the Sungai Baleh tributaries from
the helicopter.

1st picture show Nessie in Scotland and 2nd picture show the Nabau snake
at Kapit

According to Chuat Radin, the monster was Nabau, a python-type of snake, a

much bigger in size and much longer in length. Among the Iban folk tales, super
Nabau is like a “petara” (god) which has super natural powers. Seeing it alone will
bring luck to the man. Its scales used by Iban as “pangkor” which give super
strength, someone like the incredible Hulk. Nabau has also been seen at Stambak
Ulu and Ili in Betong and elsewhere in Sarawak. In Africa and Sri Lanka this type of
snake is known as ‘anaconda’.

There were tales among the Ibans in Kapit that when Temenggong Koh,
Datuk Kenneth Kanyan’s father passed away in 1950s, he became a Nabau and
used to appear in dreams. Koh was one of the pioneering Ibans who migrated to
Entawau during the Brooke regime. As he was knowledgeable in Iban Adat and had
the respect of the Brooke regime, he was made a Temenggong, the paramount chief
of the Ibans.
E) Write any future government plans for this river.

Since its interception in 1993, the Sarawak Rivers Board has striven to fulfil it
motto Towards Safe Clean and Natural Rivers. Through the SIWT Masterplan, the
Board hopes to continue striving to promote a culture of safety while on the river as
protect and preserve Sarawak's interests in its assets and its environment. All have a
role to play to make the rivers safe and, thus, effective to the lives of all who, to
extend or other, depend on it.

The government also bought kapal bandung do help serve some needs of rural
communities, there are other needs just as essential that requires fulfilling. Its
function as floating supermarkets that bring groceries and other essentials to rular
communities where land transportation is either too expensive or even nonexistent.
Next future plan government want to buy more kapal bandung to help the people.

Other than that for the United Development Programme (UNDP), effective
implementation of the Master plan will go long way in ensuring that the Millennium
Development Goals, a set of eight key development targets set for 2015 and agreed
by the global community, are achieved in Malaysia, not just at the macro level, but in
every town, district, village and longhouse in Malaysia. This goal including ensuring
environmental sustainability, disease and protect the excessive logging.

More over like in Scotland, where once a year Nessie festival is being organised,
the authority in Kapit perhaps can organise such a festival. For what you know,
the Nabau story can now become the star attraction as well as bringing more luck to
Kapit such as in the form of development and road construction which the people
have been asking for in the past 45 years. In future the main place, the government
palnt to build bridge to connect the people.

Current project done over there is Bakun hidroelektrik. Malaysia's largest and
tallest (160m) hydro electric project, Bakun Hydro Electric Dam Project, is located on
narrow Bakun Fall of Balui River.
