LEADERSHIP CHEAT CODES
PURPOSE: Equip campers to implement HSLC
values and activites at their high schools
EXPLANATION: A workbook containing instructions on how to program
HSLC activites in a high school setting
FACILITATION: Counselors will hand out workbooks
during final group time
DEBRIEF: Encourage campers to bring HSLC to their high school in concrete
ways! Follow up on the success of their events
CHECK IN: ESCAPE ROOM
PURPOSE: start the conference by grouping students so that they can meet
different campers and exec that they wouldn’t have met otherwise
EXPLANATION: exec members will round up a certain number of students
and walk from check in to a queue for an escape room. Campers will have a
certain time to escape and may get a nice little token upon completion
FACILITATION: Programming will be will be stationed and resetting each
room. Counselor/Exec interaction is crucial to move students efficiently from
the check in lines to a queue for an escape room and participating with them
DEBRIEF: If campers ask, it’s important for counselors to say it like it is: the
HSLC exec wants to give campers the opportunity to mingle with other
students prior to important time within their groups
GENERAL SESSIONS: OPENING
PURPOSE: Create a sense of unity and get everyone excited about the
conference
EXPLANATION: Intros (emcee, chair, vice chair), rules skits, counselor videos
FACILITATION: Emcees, chair, vice chairs, liaisons
DEBRIEF: Get campers excited for the weekend! Answer any questions they
might have about the weekend
GENERAL SESSIONS: U-ZOO
PURPOSE: Provides campers with information about their own leadership
styles, gives them the confidence to lead more effectively at their schools
EXPLANATION: KP will facilitate U-Zoo and use campers for a demonstration
FACILITATION: People from Creative to take notes over each animal group
DEBRIEF: Encourage the campers to not box themselves in as one animal -
they'll learn more about U-Zoo the next day!
GENERAL SESSIONS: HSLC SHUFFLE
PURPOSE: Campers have wanted to meet people outside of their group. This
activity will ccomplish that by letting campers wander and meet someone
they may not have encountered otherwise
EXPLANATION: The campers will be spread out and the emcees will give
them different attributes to pair up with other campers, For exanmple: “find
three people with the same color eyes.” The campers would then find three
people they did not know and answer and discuss a fun question together
FACILITATION: The emcees will be the main facilitators, but all of exec
should be watching for left out campers or awkward conversation.
Counselors should also participate in the game to get things going
DEBRIEF: The campers will be able to make new relationships and contact
with members outside their group both during and after the conference
GENERAL SESSIONS: SCAVENGER HUNT
PURPOSE: This is a great time for the small groups to bond and really get to
know each other. They will be completing tasks around campus as a team and
will have to work together to finish in time
EXPLANATION: Each group will be given a list of tasks to complete in the
time allotted. The tasks vary from making an album cover to building a human
pyramid in different places on campus. Each task should be photographed
FACILITATION: The emcees will explain the tasks and the counselors will help
the campers execute them. Everyone else is chillin
DEBRIEF: This scavenger hunt allows camper groups to spend quality time
together so counselors can emphasis involvement from all campers
WORKSHOPS: PROJECT LINUS
PURPOSE: Empower: In this activity campers get a hands-on and engaging
experience at HSLC. They will not only make a meaningful difference, but also
understand the importance of service and how it is at the heart of leadership
EXPLANATION: Project Linus service project involves making 75 blankets out
of fleece with campers in groups of four working together
FACILITATION: Diane Means of Project Linus will describe the organization's
mission and how to make the blankets. An exec member will give an
inspirational/motivational speech about why service is key to leadership
DEBRIEF: Let campers know that leadership is about bettering yourself as a
person. There is no better way to do this than by giving to others
WORKSHOPS: U-ZOO EXPANDED
PURPOSE: Equip: This activity will provide students with an understanding of
various leadership styles, including their own, as well as how they can work
together towards a common goal
EXPLANATION: A speaker will explain the three main learning goals for the
workshop. The students will then move to their first group consisting of only
one UZOO animal and then the second group consisting of all animals
FACILITATION: Members of exec will facilitate the discussions and help
organize the groups. Elvie, KP, or an exec member will speak for the first 5
minutes of the workshop
DEBRIEF: U-Zoo Expanded allows campers to consider their own abilities and
deficits while learning about the same of others. Knowing strengths and
weaknesses allows one to become an even more effective leaders and work
well with others
WORKSHOPS: IMPACT+IDEA SHARE
PURPOSE: This workshop will inspire and equip students with ideas for
organizations and will lay out steps that they can take with them to start
and manage these organizations at home
EXPLANATION: A main speaker (either from HASA or Swipe to Share) will
explain steps they took to start the organization. Then the students will move
freely around the room and visit with representatives from Soonerthon, Big
Event, HASA, the OU Daily, and the Union Programming Board
FACILITATION: Little facilitation is needed but exec members who are
involved with the organizations listed above are welcome to come in and
engage with campers as well
DEBRIEF: Counselors can help campers brainstorm ways to implement new
organizations/events in their own schools. Counselors can also talk about
other organizations they are part of other than HSLC
GAUNTLET: THE MAZE
PURPOSE: To show campers it's okay and even preferred sometimes to ask
for help
EXPLANATION: Campers wearing blindfolds will go into a ring of chairs that
has no exit. The only way to get out of the maze is to raise your hand and ask
for help
FACILITATION: 6 exec members, including at least 2 vets per setup
DEBRIEF: Campers will see the importance of asking for help. Also,
sometimes you need to emphasis to people that you are there to help several
times before they ask
GAUNTLET: OCTOPUS
PURPOSE: To achieve a goal as a team, while also working efficiently
EXPLANATION: Campers will use an octopus rope to pick up a bucket full of
balls and move it towards an empty bucket. Then, they will try to dump the
balls in the empty bucket without dropping any and while also doing so as
fast as possible
FACILITATION: 3 exec members (at least 1 vet) per setup
DEBRIEF: The campers need to know the value of communicating with others
to achieve a goal. Staying calm and collaborating with teammates is essential
in many situations, not just in leadership positions. It can sometimes be
difficult, but hard work and collaboration can pay off in the end with effective
communication and help from everyone
GAUNTLET: KEYPAD
PURPOSE: To communicate and devise a plan to accomplish the goal as fast
as possible
EXPLANATION: Circles will be laid out on the floor in random order, with
numbers facing up. The campers will then work numerically to touch all the
numbers, ranging from 1-30, in the least amount of time as possible
FACILITATION: 3 exec members per setup
DEBRIEF: To see the importance of communicating before and after you
attempt a task. It also teaches campers about working within a team under a
time constraint
GAUNTLET: GUMBALL ART
PURPOSE: To show how the efforts and creativity of everyone can contribute
to the completion of a task
EXPLANATION: Each camper will be given a gumball and told to chew it;
one or two campers will be chosen to mold the chewed gumballs into a
sculpture that represents their team.
FACILITATION: 5 exec members (3 judges, 2 facilitators)
DEBRIEF: The campers need to understand the concept of banding together
and building something as a team. This game illustrates how everyone's ideas
can come together and communicate one common message.
GAUNTLET: PIPELINE
PURPOSE: To show how working as a team and communicating effectively
can help accomplish a task
EXPLANATION: Each camper will be given a section of PVC pipe, divided
into two teams, and told to line up so that their PVC pipes make a cohesive
line. Marbles will be dropped into the PVC pipe at one end, and the object is
to move the marbles from one end to the other without dropping them
FACILITATION: 2-4 exec members per setup (8-16 exec members total)
DEBRIEF: The campers need to understand the value of working as a team /
understanding the different, but equally valuable, roles within a group. They
also need to see that communication and collaboration are essential for
achieving a goal
PIECE OF THE PUZZLE
PURPOSE: The puzzle aims to equip campers with confidence in their
uniqueness and individuality, to inspire them to form their own leadership
style, and to empower them to enact that style in their own schools
EXPLANATION: Each camper has their own puzzle piece which they will
according to the warm or cool color assigned to the spaces, and then place
into the puzzle according to the number on the back of their piece
FACILITATION: Programming as well as ops will ensure that campers are lined
up in number order according to the number labeled on the back of the
campers’ puzzle pieces when the camper groups come down to the stage
DEBRIEF: Counselors should encourage campers to make their piece of the
puzzle their own and to embrace their unique leadership style. The puzzle
could not exist without contributions from each camper, as well as their ability
to work together and celebrate each other’s positive contributions.
AFFIRMATION EXERCISE
PURPOSE: The goal of this activity is to inspire confidence within each
camper and to inspire the campers to show kindness to their peers
EXPLANATION: Campers will close their eyes and circle up as counselors will
be given a list of affirmations and select two campers at time to tap someone
in their group that has embodied that affirmation. Campers will switch off and
counselors are encouraged to join in to ensure every camper is tapped
FACILITATION: Counselors will read off a list of affirmations for each round
DEBRIEF: Counselors should encourage campers to take this time seriously
and to reflect on who has impacted them this weekend. It is important that
we take time to lift up the others around us who we serve and who serve us.
HSLC-U
PURPOSE: To help campers feel more equipped as they begin to think about
college or what’s next in life. The event will also inspire campers by allowing
them to hear from members of exec and senior ambassadors
EXPLANATION: A panel made up of Summer Program and Admissions and
Recruitment staff will provide info on scholarships and applications. In
addition, campers will get to meet with members of exec and senior
ambassadors to discuss their various involvement, majors, and interests
FACILITATION: Summer Programs and Admissions and Recruitment on the
panel and all of HSLC exec and Senior Ambassadors on breakout sessions
DEBRIEF: This is an opportunity to gauge further conversation about what
interests campers have, discover what you or other people on exec share in
common with them, and to guide the campers as they move forward
GENERAL SESSIONS: DDR
PURPOSE: This is often a turning point for many groups - the challenge of
coming up with a skit as a group requires each group to really work together
and listen to everyone’s ideas
EXPLANATION: Camper groups will have group time to come up with a
funny, original skit and 2 minutes to perform, followed by an intro to burn ons
FACILITATION: Emcees, Counselors, People to talk about burn-ons
DEBRIEF: This is the group's opportunity to be silly and show their
personalities! Unique and silly is ~good
DANCE
PURPOSE: The Dance allows students to go all out in the form of a dance
with fun music, good times, and good vibes
EXPLANATION: The dance will occur in pods 1 and 2 and will open the
window for students to strut their stuff and vibe
FACILITATION: Will be facilitated by the DJ primarily, but exec members who
would love to get lit should certainly do so - for the vibe
DEBRIEF: It’s lit, and you can be lit too
COLLEGE BOWL, CRAFT, & GAME SPACES
PURPOSE: To give students the opportunity decompress in different fashions
that cater to their different personalities.
EXPLANATION: An opportunity for the campers to get competitive with
friends, chill with some coloring, or get their trivia on.
FACILITATION: Exec members will hopefully float around the different areas
to make sure that students who want to participate are included and engaged
DEBRIEF: If campers ask, tell them that we wanted to give them plenty of
option to mingle or chill with fellow campers
GENERAL SESSIONS: CLOSING
PURPOSE: Reflect on the fun we've had and inspire the campers to take their
leadership skills back to their high schools
EXPLANATION: Emcee remarks, video recapping the weekend, camper
remarks, check out
FACILITATION: Emcees, ops and exec for check out
DEBRIEF: The conference has ended, but the campers should know that
you'll still be invested in their lives going forward!
