STATS 2D03 ASSIGNMENT 1
Due: THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 28, by 1 PM in the lockers on the FIRST floor of Hamilton Hall
Note: Please put the assignment in the appropriate locker for your family name.
1. a) How many potential 6 letter "words" (they do not have to be real words) can be made from
the three vowels A, I, and U, together with the three consonants R, S, T? (in all cases, each
letter is to appear exactly once)
b) How many such words can be made if the vowels have to be together and the consonants
have to be together?
c) How many such words if only the vowels have to be together?
d) How many words if the A and the U have to be together, but not I, and no consonants are
together?
2. Prove that
𝑝+𝑞 𝑝 𝑞 𝑝 𝑞 𝑝 𝑞
( ) = ( )( )+ ( )( ) + ⋯+ ( )( )
𝑘 0 𝑘 1 𝑘−1 𝑘 0
Hint: Consider p females, and q males. How many different ways can one make up a
committee of k people from this group?
3. Consider the diagram below. How many paths are there from point A to point C that goes
through point B?
All paths must follow the line segments between the points and you can only travel to the
right, or downward.
Hint: To get point B from A, you need to travel 2 steps to the right and 2 steps down, although
not necessarily in that order.
4. There are 27 characters in a computer game, from among which a player chooses two to use.
For each pair of characters, a different dialogue has to be programmed. How many different
dialogues have to be programmed?
5. Expand (3𝑥 2 + 2𝑦)7

6. A pair of dice is rolled. Let A be the event that at least one of the dice turns up a 6. Let B be the
event that the sum of the dice is even, and let C be the event that the dice sum to 10. Describe
the events AB, A U C, AC, A CC, and ABC.
7. Nineteen cell phones were returned to the store because of different reasons: four were
defective, six were not the right brand, and the rest were not the right color. Three different
customers were randomly selected.
a) What is the probability that all three returned the cell phone for the same reason?
b) What is the probability that the three returned the cell phone for different reason?
An audit of these 19 cases is carried out, where three customers files were randomly and
anonymously selected, so that the same customer file could be selected more than once (i.e.
the experiment is done “with replacement”).
c) Now what is the probability that in all three cases, the cell phone was returned for the
same reason?
d) Now what is the probability that in the three cases, the cell phones were returned for
different reasons?
8. a) N people are randomly arranged in a line; among the N are two math students. What is
the probability that the two math students are placed next to each other?
b) What would be the probability that they are placed beside each other if the N people
were arranged in a circle?
