1. Summary
In this project, we are aiming to achieve a cost effective yet a highly customizable perimeter
surveillance security system which can be used in a variety of applications. There are various
solutions (e.g CCTV - Closed-circuit television) available in the market however due to their
high costs, limited features, propriety code and restricted interfaces they are target for
specific/limited audience. Our goal is to build a video surveillance system that is cost effective,
energy efficient, highly customizable using open source technologies.
Tools required in this project
1. Raspberry Pi with a camera module
2. Linux Operating System
3. Python and open source libraries such as OpenCV
4. Custom built weather proof casing for the Raspberry circuit
2. Introduction
Raspberry Pi is a single-board general purpose computers developed in the UK that is used to
promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools and University and have inspired a
lot of programmers around the world for various small to mid-size projects. It comes in
different shapes however the one we’ll be using for project costs around $15-$20 and
including the camera module the whole project will cost around $30 which is roughly PKR
3000 and we are targeting to achieve the same functionality which a proprietary brand in the
market will cost from 30,000 to 50,000.
3. Features and Functions
The benefits of this projects are stated below:
Low cost
Highly Customizable
Modular
Compatibility
Features-rich interface
4. Goals/Objectives
Our goal is to achieve a system where it can detect any movements in pre-defined time
timeslot and then a preconfigured action, such as:
Take a snapshot of the subject
Send email with the picture a list of email addresses.
Start video recording
Option to save file/video to cloud such as AWS
Option to connect to a fire alarm that can be triggered from a remote location
Other Raspberry modules (such as smoke, vibration, fire detections) can be fit-in and
work together.
5. Procedures/Scope of Work
We’ll be testing this in various locations such as house iterance, inside premise, and in the
backyard with different lightings and weather condition and will compare the result.
6. Timetable
Below is the detailed information on the expected timetable for the project. Breaking the
project into phases, and provided a schedule for each phase.
Description of Work Start and End Dates
Phase One Build the case for the board 05 Nov – 15 Nov
Phase Two Configure Linux and setup the 16 Nov – 30 Nov
required tools and API
Phase Three Code – QA Dec – Feb
