Fall Semester 2018

Office Hours: TBA

Course Description
This course is designed for undergraduates and graduates to further cultivate their
knowledge and musicianship skills in a large ensemble setting. Performance in a large ensemble
is vital to a comprehensive music education. Students will rehearse and perform quality literature
from different styles, genres, time-periods, and various instrumentation.

Course objectives
1. The student will rehearse and perform quality literature for wind band.
2. The student will achieve proper instrumental technique such as posture, breathing, tone
quality; and tonal, rhythmic, and articulation accuracy
3. The student will achieve good musicianship skills such as good intonation, timbre and
dynamic balance, style, phrasing, and ensemble awareness.
4. The student will develop skills necessary for artistic expression and critique for wind band
literature and ensemble performance.

Expectations
1. Bring a pencil to every rehearsal.
2. Bring all music assigned to every rehearsal.
3. Maintain personal instruments in good playing condition.
4. Prepare all music to the highest level prior to every rehearsal.
5. Demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to the ensemble, as evidenced through effort
and achievement in rehearsal and performance.
6. Communicate in a timely and effective manner with the director.
7. Completion of assignments as announced.
8. Participate in all scheduled rehearsals, sectionals, and concerts.

Attendance
1. Musicians CANNOT BE EXCUSED from any rehearsals or performances.
2. Musicians WILL ATTEND ALL OTHER WIND STUDIES CONCERTS.
3. Events that are BEYOND YOUR CONTROL such as serious illness or family emergencies
will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be handled by the director of the
ensemble.
4. In the event of an emergency absence, DIRECT communication with the director is
essential. If at all possible, please call in advance of the absence.

5. In case of absence, an explanation should be offered well in advance of the next rehearsal.
Please make an appointment to speak with the director personally at a time other than just
before or just after a rehearsal. Once again, communication is the best way to handle
attendance issues.

- Each unexcused absence from a rehearsal will lower the semester grade by one letter.
- A tardy over 15 minutes will result in a unexcused absence.
- Two tardies of less than 15 minutes will equal to one unexcused absence.
- It is recommended to keep the hour prior to rehearsal open to minimize the possibility of
being late.
- Absence from dress rehearsals, or performances will also result in a failing grade.
Students who receive a failing grade must confer with the director to determine future
ensemble status.

Grading
Your final grade will consist of the following:
1. Preparation, performance, and positive contribution.
2. Attendance at rehearsals, performances, and other Wind Studies Concerts
