Rev. James Steiner

Scripture: Titus 3: 1-8a

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Dear Friends in Christ,

From what I hear, things are going pretty well here at Hill. Giving is up, attendance is stable, and
there is a renewed spirit. The Pastor Nominating Committee hopes to begin receiving resumes by
November.

On the other hand, like it or not, a multitude of opinions remain on what we might call the last
seventeen years. Sometimes, those opinions differ and sometimes, those differences may even be
strong enough to cause someone to leave. Differences of opinion, even disagreements, are fine, but
if we allow them to fester, Satan will be very happy. When we disagree wrongly, Satan jumps for
joy.

My friends, we need to (at least!) respect how someone else might feel about the last seventeen
years. Maybe someone didnt have the same experience as you; maybe that person has a different
opinion.

In Scripture, whenever someone is called by God, there is a universal theme: in every case, the
person responds negatively! From Moses to Matthew, Isaiah to Peter, the response is the same You
must be joking! You have the wrong person!

Something similar happens with me whenever God tells me to do something, I know its him,
because I get sick to my stomach! (Its like when I sneak a piece of cheese during fellowship hour.)

A few weeks ago, as I was preparing my September 10 message, God stopped me cold in my tracks
he told me what to say at a particular point, on a particular topic. (I knew it was God, because I got a
stomach ache!)

In my closing remarks, God told me to make what he felt was an important point:
Before we speak
Before we encourage
Before we admonish
Before we make a visit
Before we make a phone call
Before we stand up and say something in a congregational meeting
Before we do ANYTHING in the life of the church

We (and that means me AND you) need to ask

Does what I am about to do build up the church?
Does it bring glory to God?
Does it encourage the other?
Is it Christ-like?
Or is it simply about me and my opinions?

In Christ,

Pastor Jim

For the second month in a row, Community Dinner served a record

number of guests. Ham barbecue, baked beans, watermelon, cheese
sticks, and cake were enjoyed by 130 people! This month, we also
noticed a number of families with three, four, or five children in
tow. Theres so much need in our community. Thanks, as always, to the
dedicated volunteers who make this ministry possible and to our church family that WORSHIP
supports us with prayer and finances. For information about how you can help, contact ATTENDANCE

The Administration and Christian Education committees are pleased to announce
that the Session has hired Kathy Davis and she has rejoined the staff at the Hill
on a part time basis. She is serving as Director of Family Ministries with a
primary focus on the children and youth. Her responsibilities include providing
leadership for Wednesdays on the Hill, youth activities, summer kids and youth
events, and confirmation class. She will continue to serve Faith Presbyterian
Church in West Kittanning as their lay pastor so you will not see her regularly on
Sunday mornings. Kathy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position and we
know she will be a wonderful addition to our staff.
Who Am I? Thats the theme for the first three weeks of Kids Club this fall. Great Bible stories from the Book of
Genesis will help us answer that question. All the great things you love about Wednesdays on the Hill are back- skits,
music, games, good food, Bible Stories and projects. And most important many of the people you love- and who love
you- are back! The second three weeks our theme is How I Can Follow God?, with more terrific stories from the book
of Genesis. Finally, well ask a very important question the last three weeks- BTW. Who is God Anyway? Along the
way, youll hear about some fun times and some chances to serve others in Jesus name.

Who Am I? Thats also a way to start talking about the new lady youll see wandering around. Some of you know her
already by a lot of different names. When she was younger and worked with Education ministry at Hill Church, she had
brown hair (not a little brown and lots of gray) and many of you called her Miss Kathy. Down the road a bit, at the
other church where she works, the kids call her Pastor Kathy. Her mom calls her Kathleen. Up on the Hill some of you
call her, Hey, Franks Mom! (She has another son named John.) and some of you, who have been out to Milkweed
Farm to swim or ride the Sky Pogo or Zipline call her Grandma Kathy. (Because she is Jordans and Brodies grandma.
And also Gabes and Seths and Annabellas and Emsleighs). BTW, if you havent been to Milkweed Farm, maybe you
can come out in the spring and meet Blackberry Jelly and Cody Biscuit. They are Cocker Spaniels- like Lady in Lady and
the Tramp. They are her fur kids. You can also feed the seven fish and one frog while you are there. Whatever you decide
to call her, Kathy is very happy to spend some time with all of you following the path Jesus is leading us along this year.
Presbyterian Womens Thank Offering service will be held on October 15th. Our speaker will be Rev. Liddy
Barlow. Rev. Barlow is the Executive Minister of Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania. She grew up
in Keene, New Hampshire and attended Mount Holyoke College. Prior to her ministry at Christian Associates,
Rev. Barlow served congregations in downtown Pittsburgh and North Huntingdon. She lives in Pittsburgh with
her husband and two young children.

Presbyterian Women will be hosting their Soup and Salad Fall Gathering on Saturday, October 14th at noon.
All women and girls are invited. Our world travelers, Marsh and Sharon Miller, will be the speakers.
Reservations are due no later than Sunday, October 8th. Please use the form below to reserve your seat(s).
