Chess Strategy Lesson 02
Pawn Structures
Why pawn is a important piece?
If a piece like a knight or a bishop is placed on bad position it can be moved to a another square or
returned to the previous position. But pawns are not allowed to move back once they move forward.
Pawns have low mobility.
Types of pawn structures
Connected Pawns
They are mutually connected each other & called as good pawns. This type of pawns brings a
advantage by covering the squares in front. When advancing the pawns it is difficult to support
each other and leave a chance for the opponent to attack. Sometimes they may become
hanging pawns.
Backward Pawns
It cannot be protected by another pawn & cannot be move forward either. If your opponent
has a backward pawn you must attack quickly. It will give you a advantage & help you to active
your pieces. Square in front of such a pawn is weak.
Isolated Pawns
Isolated pawns cannot be protected by other pawns. Square in front of a such pawn can be a
weak square & your opponent can occupy his/her pieces on it.
How to play against a Isolated Pawn?
1. Exchange the pieces and simplify the position.
2. Blocking the Pawn.
3. Putting the pressure on the pawn by using all the pieces.
Doubled Pawns
When two pawns are located on the same file it calls double pawns. In most cases double
pawns are considered as weak. Isolated double pawns give a big disadvantage sometimes
