M.C.Q'S (Diffusion)

Active transport requires energy to move molecules against a concentration gradient, diffusion moves molecules down a concentration gradient without requiring energy, and osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to lower. When a potato cube is placed in a sucrose solution, it gains mass through osmosis as the higher concentration of water inside the potato cells moves into the lower concentration solution, decreasing the sucrose concentration. Oxygen will diffuse out of a plant cell because its concentration is higher inside the cell than outside.
