MAED 3224
Subject: Third Grade Geometry Central Focus: Reason with shapes and theirs
attributes
Common Core Objective: 3.G.A.2 Partition Date taught:
shapes into parts with equal areas. Express
the area of each part as a unit fraction of the
whole. For example, partition a shape into 4
parts with equal area, and describe the area
of each part as of the area of the shape.
Daily Lesson Objective:
Performance- Students will be able to partition shapes into equal parts.
Conditions- Students will be working with pairs to determine equal parts of shapes
Criteria- Mastery is shown by receiving 4 out of 5 on the exit ticket
Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed: Shapes: What are shapes? What are the shapes?
Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time
1. Engage 5
Today we will be working with sharing. When
we are sharing do we share stuff equally?
When we cut a whole into we are making
equal FRACTIONS. Can anyone tell me what a
fraction is? What can we break up into
fractions? Did you know we could break
shapes into fractions?
2. Explore https://www.youtube.com/watch? 12
v=6ooKWyPI0i4
(including solutions of major
tasks) Start with this video to introduce breaking
shapes into fractions. What do you think of
this video? What fraction did you see? Do you
want to try it? Lets do this worksheet with a
partner. What we are doing is trying to find
the halves and the fourths and separate
them.
3. Explain Now lets talk about this worksheet. I would 12
put the worksheet on the overhead projector
and have the shapes cut out. As a class we
would sort the shapes into the categories and
talk about why they belong where they do.
4. Elaborate/Extend For struggling students I would like assemble 12
a small group of them and work with them to
help them determine a key The students will
have to make a little chart in their math
notebook. It will be and a couple different
ways to draw it. Then it will be and a couple
different ways to draw it. The children would
work independently but have me guiding
them through the activity. This way they have
the practice they need on a lower level of
engagement.
For students who need a challenge they can
go onto the back of the worksheet which is
the worksheet below. This will give them more
practice with relatable images. Children will
work independently on the worksheet and
check their answers with a partner when they
both finish.
5. Evaluate Children will have an exit ticket. On the ticket 5
there will be three questions. One will be what
(assessment methods) did you learn today for 1 pt. Another
questions will be to determine if the shaded
part of the shape is a fourth or a halve for
3pts. The last question would be to test their
knowledge and see if they would move on to
the next lesson and it would only be 1pt for
doing it. The question would be to shade in
of a shape to see if the class was ready to
move onto the next lesson or if there was still
help needed.
