comfortable. If being outside as a large group is too
overwhelming for him altogether. He can be evaluated
at another time individually.
Hyde has a visual schedule of the daily events that
allows him to know and prepare for what is coming
next. This seems to reduce some of his anxiety.

RATIONALE for The students should have some prior knowledge about road CK

Introduction Activating Prior Knowledge
A simple discussion will lead the lesson. The students
will be sitting at the rug and will be asked if they have
ever crossed a street before. If they have how did they
get across safely?
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
The story On the Road (Watch out!) will be read to the
class. This story addresses community safety rules
focusing on road safety and crossing the street.

The students, in pairs, will demonstrate crossing the

one by sharing what color of car their parents drive.

Lesson PreAssessment of Students
Procedure The students will be asked whether or not they have
ever crossed a busy street by foot before. If they have,
what safety precautions did they use? Did they cross
safely?
Modeling of the Concept
The lesson will be beginning with circle time. The story
will be read and then the web quest will be gone
through, open discussion happening whenever
necessary. Next, the class as a whole will go outside
near a sidewalk. We will be practicing the safety
techniques needed to cross a street. (A cross walk will
be drawn on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk.) I will be
modeling looking both ways and cautiously crossing the
street before the students practice themselves.
Guiding the Practice
While the web quest is being completed the road
crossing practice activity will be introduced and
demonstrated. While we are outside practicing crossing
the street safely, I will be asking them questions like If
your basketball rolled onto the busy street what would
you do? This will guide them to start thinking critically
about road safety.
Providing the Independent Practice
After the practice activity outside, the students will have
the opportunity to use the iPad app, Playing it Safe:
Road Safety independently to further work on road
safety rules.
Transition
The students will be called the line up to go outside
based on their table colors. (red, blue, and yellow)

accuracy.
