Course objectives:
To equip students with understanding of the fundamental principles and
techniques of basic engineering.
To make student understand the basic manufacturing process.
To develop knowledge on power transmission.
Course Description:
Unit I
Introduction:
Role of mechanical engineering in industry and society - A historical overview
of evolution of mechanical systems with examples - Role of materials,
manufacturing process and engineering analysis.
Energy and Steam: Forms and Classification of energy; Utilization of energy,
Steam its types and properties Specific Volume; Enthalpy and Internal energy;
Steam boilers classification; Lancashire boiler, Babcock and Wilcox boiler, Boiler
mountings; Accessories, their locations and applications.
Turbines: Steam turbines Classification, Principle of operation of Impulse and
reaction. Delavals turbine; Parsons turbine; Gas turbines Classification, Working
principles and Operations of Open cycle and Closed cycle gas turbines. Water
turbines Classification, Principles and operations of Pelton wheel, Francis turbine
and Kaplan turbine.
Unit II
Internal Combustion Engines:
Classification, I.C. Engines parts, 2/4 Stroke Petrol and 4-stroke diesel engines. P-V
diagrams of Otto and Diesel cycles. Problems on indicated power, Brake power,
Indicated thermal efficiency, Brake thermal efficiency, Mechanical efficiency and
specific fuel consumption.
Refrigeration and Air conditioning:
Refrigerants, Properties of refrigerants, Ice making capacity, Commonly used
refrigerants. Refrigeration - Definitions - Refrigerating effect, Ton of Refrigeration,
COP, Relative COP, Unit of Refrigeration. Principles and applications of air
conditioners.
Unit III
Introduction to Manufacturing process :
Introduction to Casting process; Rolling process; Forging process and Extrusion
process.
Machining process
Lathe - Principle of working of a centre lathe. Parts of a lathe. Operations on lathe -
Turning, Facing, Knurling, Thread Cutting, Drilling, Taper turning by Tailstock offset
method and Compound slide swivelling method, Specification of Lathe
Drilling Machine Principle of working and classification, specification of drilling
machines. Bench drilling Machine, Radial drilling machine. Operations on drilling
machine -Drilling, Boring, Reaming, Tapping, Counter sinking, Counter boring and
Spot facing.
Milling Machine - Principle & Types of milling machines & operations. Principle &
working of horizontal and vertical milling machines, Milling processes &
specifications.
Unit IV
Joining Processes, Lubrication and Bearings
Soldering, Brazing and Welding: Definitions, Classification and method of
Soldering, Brazing and welding and differences. Brief description of arc welding and
Oxy-Acetylene welding
Unit V
Power Transmission
Belt Drives - Classification and applications, Derivations on length of belt.
Definitions - Velocity ratio, Creep and slip, Idler pulley, stepped pulley and fast &
loose pulley.
Gears - Definitions, Terminology, Types and uses. Gear drives
Gear Trains Definitions and classifications.
